It's one of my all-time favorite movies, but that 5 Star version was and is the only version anyone could ever want or need.

Also, there was yet ANOTHER slip-cover version, not with Will Smith's face, but instead a banner quoting its visual effects Oscar win - several FOX titles were recently packaged that way, promoting their Oscar wins.

I disagree. If re-promoting this movie didn't bring in additional sales the first three times, I seriously doubt they'd try a fourth time. I sometimes question the sanity of marketing people, but even they're not this dumb.

And yes, I miss the Five Star line.

Why spend so much time making 5 versions of one movie, when you have titles like True Lies, The Abyss, and Broken Arrow laying around with non-anamorphic transfers....

If a film is good, it will stand the test of time. The buying public does not need to be reminded of the film annually with another DVD release.

I'll stick with my five star version. I'm another that misses that line.

I'm hoping to devote an entire shelf of my rack to this movie. Keep 'em coming, Fox!

If you're going to call it a 10th anniversary edition, you would think Fox would, ya know, make it special?

Yawn...

I, too, wish the Five Star Collection series had been continued and expanded. I don't agree so much with the reasons given for its cancellation, but then, I'm not the head of marketing for Fox Home Entertainment.

The release date for this new one - June 27, is exactly 6 years after the 5 Star original came out...huh.

The 5-star release was/is the best release for this movie... and im sorry it was a really good epicish blockbuster... but no movie needs 5 DVD releases! Especially with blu/hd coming out in less than a month now...

Requirements for me to double dip

I'm not buying any movies I have on DVD again unless they are 1080p and DTS HD. There are many I would double dip for but I'm not rebuying anything unless it has those two features together.

This is definitely one of the movies I would double dip for if it was offered 1080p and DTS-HD.

I see that some of the HD-DVDs are going to be 1080p right off the bat - I'm very impressed -that will put a lot of pressure on the BR camp to release 1080p movies as well.

I'm still holding out for DTS-HD because sound is that important to me. I'm stoked about the 1080p on new HD-DVDs though!

That was the first thing I thought too!
I'm sticking with my 2-disc DTS region 2 Japanese release.

They're all 1080P aren't they?

Me to, I don't think there is anything new or better they can do with any future release of "ID4" on dvd. Sure, they can smack on more extras and make it a 3 or 4 disc set, but with all the versions of the film available, only a newly restored print on a Criterion release would make me upgrade or Hi-Def. hehe.

I don't think there is a definite since there is only a small sampling. I know a while back they some said they wouldn't necessarily release 1080p immediately. Some titles already anounced will be 1080p so I'm hoping that will somewhat force BR to be 1080p right off the bat which would in turn force the studios using HD to release all 1080p. The competition may actually working in our favor.

Now if we could see some updates on DTS-HD I would be stoked!

I'm happy with my Five-Star which I purchased when it first came out (in 2000).

They could have at least issued an improved transfer with one of these re-releases. However, the current transfer is still pretty good even for today's standards if my memory is correct...it's been a while since I last watched it.

I´m happy with my Double Digipack, which was released in 2003. The same as the 5-Star release. Only difference is the Digipak with slipcase, and that all the Easter Eggs have got their own seperate menu. Much better I think.

So you honestly think this film has already been re-release three times and it's made no difference on sales? You think the marketing folks saw the 0% increase and figured what the hell, let's try a fourth time? I don't think so. It's certainly annonying to us who have owned the title for years to see yet another re-release. But their strategy must be working or they wouldn't keep doing it over and over. Or do you think they're dumb enough to not track the sales stats?

But why not put focus on titles that deserve a re-release. The Abyss, True Lies, and Broken Arrow still do not have anamorphic transfers. I seriously doubt Independence Day will be one of Fox's top selling titles this year, considering there's already about 4 versions out there and the film is 10 years old. I mean, who hasn't seen this movie?

I don't own any ID4's but might someday. Just haven't felt the need yet.

I second a lot of people's sentiments about why they need to repackage this again when there is no worthwhile edition of True Lies available. I refuse to buy the barebones True Lies, but would happily buy a special edition with some commentary.
