I worked on this one and I remember telling Jonathan and Neil how important I thought it would be to include a 2.0 mix for people without surround systems. Their response was along the lines of "We're gonna put a whole bunch of different options on there, don't worry about it kid." I can tell you Neil was very serious about making this DVD a top-notch presentation and he and Jonathan would have definitely done everything they could to convince Paramount to do a bang-up job. The final mix for the film also includes a lot of "point-of-view" stuff. By this I mean that when the picture cuts to one musician from another, the mix is adjusted to bring whatever is on screen a bit more front and center, both in terms of direction and relative volume. Neil talked about wanting the DVD to have an option to listen to a flatter mix, but it looks like that might not have happened. Maybe space was an issue.Originally Posted by Giles
Paramount - DTS?! what stars aligned to make that happen? Will definately be buying this.
As for the rest of the specs, I will say that at one point we had a two page document floating around with a huge typed list of all of the potential special features. It looks like a fair amount of them made the set- I'm glad Paramount went ahead with the 2-disc plan. Unfortunately, based on some of the titles of the features listed, I can only guess at what they are. But... for starters:
The features "Cruising with Neil" and "Cruising with the Players" will probably be much longer sections from the "back seat of the car" interviews that Jonathan did. There was a ton of great material there so you can imagine compressing it to about 7 minutes for the final film meant that some good stories had to hit the floor. Rehearsal Diaries- JD and others shot more than 40 hours of MiniDV in the days and hours leading up to the two shows. There are some great moments on those tapes. The guy who was cutting it together has a unique sensibility, so expect this to be looser than a traditional "making of" featurette. That may explain the decision to narrate. Warming Up with Neil and the Jubilee Singers is a bit of DV that Jonathan got at Farm Aid this past year. It's a short, simple (two cameras rolling) look at how Neil gets himself ready to hit the stage. He leads the singers through some vocal exercises while he plays a piano backstage. Others are bustling by without a backwards glance, so you get the idea this is a ritual. Fellow Travellers might be (I bet) stills with text diaries of his fellow musicians. The bonus song is, obviously, a song that Neil performed that was lifted from the final cut of the film. The mixers did have a go at it though, and we did cut the picture, so it won't be "rough" i.e. it should have a presentation equal to the rest of the film. These Old Guitars. Hmm. My best guess is, it's an interview with Larry Cragg (Neil's guitar tech), a small piece of which is in the final film. I'm not sure though. The blast from the past feature is obvious. The only one I have no idea about is "Finishing Touches" since I was on the show during the entire post-production period, except for maybe the last week of color correction, and we never had a documentary crew filming us. So I can't imagine. Maybe it is an interview with JD or Neil, talking about the process of cutting picture and mixing sound. It certainly won't be an in-depth look at the actual post-production period.
Anyway, hope this all gets you guys excited. I had an amazing time working on the movie and it was a huge honor to work for Jonathan and Andy Keir (the editor, who did a hell of a job.) I even got to spend some time around Neil and he was really cool. Everything about the show was great (if you haven't seen Ellen Kuras' photography yet you'll be really amazed) so it remains the only movie I've worked on that I think is really wonderful. I constantly check online forums to see what people are saying about it and it makes me really happy to see that you all can't wait for the DVD.
