Stargate SG-1 DVD sets repackaged thinpaks
SONY is going to be repackaging all sets of Stargate SG-1 into thinpaks including future season releases. The style is similar to the release of Atlantis S1.
I'll be keeping my big boxes, they look better! TVoD asked SONY to consider offering consumers the new packaging itself, and they appeared open to the idea but didn't say they would do so. SONY should offer the BIG BOXES as well through the mail or whatever.
This trend is really getting annoying! Booooooo....

These decisions are made with a total lack of regard to consumers. I have the first 8 seasons of Stargate on dvd (compliments of Best Buy's B1G1 Free boxset sale, that included this series).
I'd either like to have all of the series available in the regular boxes, or all in thinpaks. But this mish-mash of box shapes isn't too pretty looking whilst sitting on the dvd shelves. But that's just me, 'sidering I'm one of those "anal collectors."
One thing TVonDVD should've inquired about, is seeing if Sony would release the new seasons in the traditional box sizes, for those who have invested in those already.

Whew.
I'm glad I never bought any of these sets. I watched all the available seasons thanks to Netflix about 4 months ago. I planned on eventually getting the sets but space around here is getting hard to come by so this is great news.
I do hope they find some way to help out those of you who like to keep your sets in the proper order because I know that if I should ever meet anyone from Lions Gate I will promptly punch them in the face for:
1) Having each season of The Dead Zone come out with some sort of glitch or problem
2) Changing the packaging of the above named show for each season so far.

That's OK; here in r2-land (or at least the UK) we've been screwed over already? How you may ask? Simple; the first five seasons had a box design just like the r1's (except a bit bigger as our sets had one more disc) - in fact, I mixed r1 and r2 sets with no problem, the outer box was exactly the same - you know, with the image of the Stargate forming an arch, etc. Looked nice when you put four or five sets together. The only thing that changed was the colour. Oh, the design on the spines of the single discs inside didn't match (yours used the Stargate again, our didn't).
Trouble was, when we went to Season Six, the stupid sods used a totally different design to the previous sets. It looks terrible. You lucky people in r1land kept the consistent design.
What Sony really need to do is to make either the new thinkpak design (I actually like these, they look good, and take up a lot less room - my later Babylon-5 sets use it, and so do those chunky great lumps of anime from ADV) available to buy separately for existing owners, or the old design of box/Amaray covers available (as "collectors edition packaging" maybe).
This being Sony, I'm willing to bet they won't do either. What a pain, at least when they muck about with covers you can get fan ones. If they change the card box, you're stuffed.

Hey MasterOfDVD an Neibroth, although I share your thoughts in the "aww, shit/bollocks!" kind of way, at least I know there are others sharing in my pain. :sheepish grin:

I just recently rearranged my dvds and this one shelf I have fits 10 Sg-1 box sets perfectly. On an assumption that season 10 will be the last I put 1`-8 on that shelf with space reserved for 9 and 10. Well here's to seasons 11 and 12. I bet the Ori are behind this.
On a side note. A friend of mine, and fellow Stargate fan, works for Wal-Mart and at the annual convention here in K.C. Sony had a Blu-Ray demonstration display set-up and they were playing Blu-Ray discs of SG-1 and Atlantis.

Well, considering how the DVD market is currently going when it come to shelf space AND add to the fact that Sony had the big buy one get one free sale at the end of last year, IMO this was something that was bound to happen.
Especially if you add into the fact that the Atlantis DVD's are packaged that way!!!
Not a big deal as I've already moved my S1-8 all into thinpacks already (just cost me some time, ink and paper) but if Sony offers the new packaging to existing customers, i'd be into getting it!

Star Trek Enterprise was, wasn't it?
The downside is that Sony will probably spend most of it's "home video" budget on Blu-Ray editions of stuff it's already released.
When it could be spending money getting out stuff that is stuck in it's archives (particularly now it's got MGM as well) out on DVD. Like more of the Midnite Movies range. I wish!
I seem to recall Warner saying that despite the huge number of films they've released onto DVD, it's less than a quarter of the archive. And that they, at least, intend to spend at least as much on getting more stuff out on DVD as they do messing around with releasing HD editions of stuff already out there.
