Great...the best foreign film of last year. Let's see now what extras will be provided...

I'll settle for the DVD since it was in and then out of the only theater here that goes on a limb with more adventurous films (better catch Tristam Shandy quick!).

By far, my most anticipated DVD and second favorite movie from last year! Does anyone know which studio? Sony perhaps?

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and will probably see it again tonight. And I can't wait for the DVD release.

ETA: Richard, what was #1?

Isn't it coming out in another region much sooner (hopefully w/ English subs)?

Tropical Malady. Though I suspect that future viewings of "Cache" may put it over the top. Haneke films improve for me with every viewing (though I leave not much room for that with "Cache").

Good to hear that Sony Pictures Classics has this one. I've been impressed by their recent transfers ("Saraband" comes to mind, for one).

On the other hand, I'm deeply disappointed - if not exactly shocked - that the DVD Talk review of Kino's upcoming "Funny Games" confirms our fears: an improperly converted PAL>NTSC port of the (non English subbed) French set. I wonder if Artificial Eye will be releasing PAL ports of the French set (with English subs, naturally) for the early Haneke films? Does anyone know?

There is an upcoming SE of Funny Games in the UK and...Tartan are releasing the rest of the French set also during the summer.

I cant vouch for the DVD, but the digital projection I saw in the theatre was impecible.

Or maybe not... it seems my love for "Tropical Malady" isn't exactly universal!

But if you're looking to see "Tropical Malady" on DVD, don't bother with the R1 release; get the Thai DVD instead ($10.50 shipped anywhere from ethai.com). If you recall, the second half in the Thai jungle has a remarkable sound design. I believe Weerasethakul and his sound guy went on long treks in the jungle to record it. Unfortunately, the R1 reduces the 5.1 mix to a rather mushy 2.0 track. It really makes a difference.

Regarding the early Haneke films, do we think it very likely that the UK releases (from Tartan and someone else?) will be superior to the improperly converted PAL>NTSC ports that Kino will use? (I hope so.)

I can't wait to see this. I knew that I would have to wait to DVD before seeing it, since there is no way it would play anywhere local.

That's too bad. I hope you have a big screen and can watch it in near-perfect darkness. Atmosphere and immersion are everything with this film.

I'll probably be getting the Artificial Eye release, although I'll have to compare extras first. Definitely one of my favorite films of 2005.

The French edition appears to be available this week - any chance of 'Sous-titres Anglais'?
Also, any word on whether the extras listed will be present on the U.K. version?

DVD 2:

Thanks.

Gonna pick this up. Amazon lists a making-of doc and a doc on the director. Are they the lengthy ones on the French DVD?
