The New World Special Edition?

Anyone know if there's any "extended" or "special" edition planned for The New World? I'm trying to decide whether or not go for the May release but would wait if I knew something more extensive would be coming...

Thanks!

the rumour is that a version with all three cuts: the 135min, the first theatrical cut: 150min and the expanded version at 180min will be in a box set. The Digital Bits mentioned this, but as of now, it's a still in the planning stages AFAIK.

Sounds like a great treatment for a flick that most people won't like.

Not a condemnation, just pointing out that it's really not a film for everyone.

Very good info. I'll keep an eye out for it - thanks!

Oh, and I agree that not everyone will like this film, but for those that it's right for, it's one for the ages...

I thought the movie was great up until Pocahontas left her village. The movie had some great action scenes in it up until then. Some good indian attacks. But after she left her village the film just dragged. I don't think I will double dip on this unless they add some good historical documentaries to the special features.

I would double-dip in a heartbeat on this, but I don't think it's ever happening. The Days of Heaven Criterion was the best double-dip I ever did.

I just watched this movie for the first time today and loved it.
Now of course i'm dying to see the extended cut, hopefully they get around to releasing it sooner rather than later.

From a WB press release:

Burbank, Calif, June 23, 2008 - The New World, Academy Award® nominated director Terrence Malick’s (The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven) adventure-filled journey of discovery, will be released October 14 on DVD in a new amped-up Extended Cut. This edition of the critically-acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated epic recreating the turbulent first days of the new America now features more than 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage, heightening the viewing experience with more battles, more intensity and more visual splendor. Also included is a comprehensive, ten-part documentary – Making the New World – which captures the unique creative challenges filmmakers faced. The New World Extended Cut will sell for $19.97 SRP.

Synopsis
Powhatan tribal people stare in wonder as three ships approach shore. It’s a story every schoolchild knows; the story of Capt. John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q’orianka Kilcher). Now, as told by filmmaker Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line) in this extended version with more than 30 minutes of footage unseen in theaters -- it’s a story you never imagined. Working in part from first-hand histories and adding his extraordinary sense of image and human drama, Malick crafts a visceral, spellbinding tale of the Jamestown settlement, of cultures connecting and of deadly consequences when connections fray. Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer also star.

Special Features
· A comprehensive, ten-part documentary Making the New World capturing the unique challenges of creating this historic epic.

The New World Extended Cut

^Cool. Would have been nice to have some new extras but 35+ minutes of new footage will be enough to get me to get this film.
Still is a powerful compelling film that will be interesting to see expanded.

Wow, great news.

Though a special edition of Badlands would have made this an even greater announcement.

I loved the original release and will be buying this as well. Great news! I wonder if the new footage will be integrated via seamless branching or instead one would have the option of watching either version, theatrical or extended.

I'll have to get this also. 30 extra minutes of battles and intensity is a winner for me.
I thought the movie was good up until the point when Pocahontas left her country.
The extra minutes should improve the movie.

what? end it like the Disney animated film - no... I thought the last scene where she is in the English garden was devastingly sad and emotional.

Are either of the new cuts approved by Malick? It sounds like the original theatrical cut might be, but I'm only interested in seeing these cuts if Malick approves. Hopefully they won't be one of those "jam all the deleted scenes back in" type of extended cuts.

Probably a moot point for me if they don't intend to release it on Blu-Ray. At this point any kind of release getting this much care should be on both formats.

At least 2 years ago it was said that Malick was working on a 3 hour cut of The New World, so this is definitely his own longer cut of the movie that's finally being released.

Now if only we could get the ~5 hour version of The Thin Red Line

no HD, no sale.

Sad because this would have been the perfect tie-in excuse to release a remastered Badlands as well (also on Bd).

30 extra minutes?

I thought there was supposed to be a 4-hour Director's Cut waiting around somewhere...
