Platoon 20th Anniversary 2 Disc Set - May 30th

From USA Today,

More Depp, interviews on collector's 'Platoon'

Johnny Depp had a minor part in Oliver Stone's Platoon, which won four Oscars. His role expands on the Platoon 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition DVD, due May 30 (Sony, $25).

Depp, who plays a private in the film, appears in some footage that hit the cutting-room floor. The film stars Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe. "Oliver Stone remembered additional footage he had shot," says Marc Rashba of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. "We finally found more than 10 minutes of footage mislabeled in film archives."

The two-disc DVD set also will include new interviews with Stone and three new documentaries about the Vietnam War and the making of the film.

Cameron 03-16-06 11:19 PM

hopefully it will be in the deleted scenes and not added back into the film because Depp is a major star now. As long as they port over the commentaries and extras I'm up for it.

AnonomusBob15 03-16-06 11:40 PM

I already have the Not-So-Ulitimate Ultimate Oliver Stone Collection, and the Platoon disc is excellent.

Surely this isn't a director's cut since Stone would have done that already. This release just seems to capitalize on Depp, which makes it worthless in my opinion.

scrimshaw 03-17-06 04:42 AM

Wow, I'm so glad Sony bought MGM. Now we get twice as many totally unnecessary double and triple-dips.

I hope they don't re-edit the film, it's perfect as it is. I mean, it won a Best Picture Oscar for a reason.

marty888 03-17-06 07:07 AM

Seems to be a totally unneccesary re-release, hardly worth purchasing for 10 minutes of cutting-room droppings. And it's not as if Oliver Stone hasn't already had twenty years of expressing himself on this material - I can't really imagine he has new thoughts on Vietnam.

matome 03-17-06 08:06 AM

I have that kick-ass bound Pioneer Special Edition laserdisc as well as the regular DVD, so this had better have some substantial additions to make it worthwhile. Concentrating on Depp, who had a tiny part in this, will not cut it in my book. Maybe, if they did it for Keith David...

ShagMan 03-17-06 08:28 AM

Sounds to me like it will be re-edited. Dunno if that's good or not.

animatedude 03-17-06 11:21 AM

Sony is being Sony...

It could be; they said they just found the footage which had been mislabelled. But it doesn't seem like it would be a hugely neccessary director's cut; it's not as if he's said, for the last twenty years, "Boy, I wish people could've seen the Depp footage that I saw!"

I'll consider it, but I won't rush out to pick it up.

JOE29 03-17-06 03:36 PM

I'll pick it up. I'd like to see the documentaries on the Vietnam war also.

Fok 03-17-06 03:43 PM

hmmm I'll stick to my existing copy

GoldenJCJ 03-17-06 05:42 PM

I'm surprised they'ree not releasing this around the 4th of July to capitalize on POTC 2.

I'll wait for some reviews, I like the current release enough as is. 2 great commentaries, an incredible hr. long Doc. etc..

cactusoly 03-17-06 05:45 PM

I'll get it, I held off on the original

Cameron 03-18-06 01:25 AM

I had sold off the old gold cover version to trade up for anamophic...so I'll wait and buy this. (unless its a re-edit) I don't need new footage in this movie

Looks like it isn't going to be an extended cut. Sounds like a nice set for anyone who doesn't already own it or any other of the three releases.

Mr. Cinema 03-20-06 09:15 AM

The single disc SE is a solid release. Unless the reviews say the video is an incredible improvement, I will keep the current dvd.

chsidwel 03-20-06 11:28 AM

I'll be sticking with what I already have (I've already bought 2 versions).

freudguy 03-20-06 01:48 PM

No sale. Remember when there were "new" catalog releases?

Completely agree. there are so many catalog titles from Sony that are currently unreleased, that it is obnoxious in their part to keep pushing re-releases over and over.

supfool! 03-26-06 10:45 PM

I don't know, this looks like a pretty good version. Check out davisdvd and it seems that This version has just about everything from the special edition and a boat load of extra documentaries and crud. Also, the cover is awesome.

definately agree with this though. Such a shame that studios don't sort out they priorities a little better.

fryinpan1 05-29-06 07:38 AM

Any reviews on this yet? I only care if the transfer is improved.
