I'm wondering if the Oliver Stone commentary from the LD has been ported over to this DVD, or if he re-recorded a completely new commentary.

I bought the barebone edition for 10$, dold it for 10$, found the aniversary edition in the 6$ bin at WM...happy with it...

will skip on that one...

This is so tempting, but I don't know, great film and this dvd looks like the best version of the film ever available, but I rarely watch my old MGM dvd that I still own. So not sure If I will do an upgrade at all or even if I need to.

Wasn't going to pick this up until I checked it out at Best Buy today and noticed it has a DTS track. That sold me immediately. Opened it up and there is a real nice clear slipcover and an actual booklet insert. No annoying previews. I just checked out a bit of the movie so far, so I can't really compare it with the previous 2001 MGM disc till later, but the picture looked pretty good. Box says it's remastered in High Definition for what it's worth.

Extras:

Audio Commentary with Military Advisor Dale Dye
Audio Commentary by Director Oliver Stone
Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes with Commentary by Oliver Stone

Documentaries:
·Creating the 'Nam
·One War, Many Stories
·Raw Wounds: The Legacy of Platoon
·Snapshot in Time: 1967-1968
·Tour of the Inferno
·Preparing for 'Nam
TV Spots, Photo Gallery and Theatrical Trailer

This looks to be a nice set with nice packaging. I'm definitely going to pick this up through CH as a freebie or enrollment when it rolls around (if it does).

Aha! The commentary MUST be the same as the Pioneer SE LD, as it also had these two commentaries. Thanks for (unintentionally) answering my earlier question!

I have the Pioneer SE LD as well (now THAT'S a Special Edition), so I'll throw it in to compare and see if they are the same commentaries. I'm betting they are.

Thanks! It was the revelation that the 2nd commentary track by Military Advisor Dale Dye was on the new DVD release that led me to conclude that both commentaries were the same on the new DVD and the PSE LD.

I'll see if I can dig the LD out of storage tonight, as I plan to watch the new DVD as well.

Tha Freak 05-31-06 10:30 AM

I Agree. Especially if you don't have it already Platoon, the DTS sound is a really nice improvement IMO.

Well?

Sorry, wasn't able to get to it the past couple of days. Tonight for sure!

ShagMan 06-02-06 09:08 AM

I haven't had a chance to load it, the packaging was classy! The slipcover and artwork were nicely thought out, and there was a nice multi-page insert as well.

What would have been nice is a dark army green custom 2 disc case. The standard Lord Of The Rings dvds have had similar touches with case coloring. Not that it matters, but it's a nice touch for a film that certainly deserves it.

LiK 06-02-06 12:05 PM

seems like this is worth getting, i have the anniversary version. i'll wait for further price drops tho. it's cheap already but i bet this dvd will be even cheaper in a few months

darmok 06-02-06 02:46 PM

i'll pick this up when it goes below $10. $17 plus tax just seems so much for a bland reissue.

Cinemaddiction 06-02-06 05:13 PM

Since when does 2 commentaries, 12 new deleted scenes, 2 new featurettes, a new HD remastering, and a DTS track constitute a "bland" release?

Since a lot of this stuff was on a previous release?

They're fucking crazy with that MSRP, no thanks...

AnonomusBob15 06-02-06 08:15 PM

No, actually, it is adding the new transfer and dts audio, featurettes and deleted scenes.

The new release is far from a reissue, but the first set had so much on it, I still think it will do just fine.

It's a f**king crazy price without a doubt. I paid $18 bucks, there also may not be much of a difference with the video transfer either. See the review posted on Digitallyobsessed.com.

My only complaint was the price, way to high to warrant a repurchase for most, I love the dvd though. I'd say $9.99 or something is a better price for this re-release.

..which is why I singled out the new features. I highly doubt you'll see the day when a 2 Disc SE, with a DTS track, will be below $9.99.
