Probably the best reason why it was oop, is simply because its not listed anymore as in stock at amazon, and those marketplace seller saw the opportunity to jack up the price up to atleast $60.
I think there is more to it than that. A lot of these e-tailers simply never got any to begin with. No, if I had to hazard a guess I would say that an initial run of the 2-Disc was done before Universal got a good handle on the performance of the film at the box office and award ceremonies, saw that it didn't light either on fire and figured it wasn't worth the extra cost to continue making two versions. Again, purely a guess.

I happen to be one of those sellers. Believe me, after the fees, "jacking" the price to $60 (on an item running as high as $39.99 + tax) is actually running at rather thin margins considering the exclusivity of the title at this point and the time and effort and $ involved in obtaining these.

Don't want to start a war, though; sellers know what I'm talking about, and buyers seeking titles which inextricably vanish have another set of concerns and are understandably frustrated at the situation.

Doing my good deed for the day, anyway: Movies Unlimited has the CE both at Amazon and on their website for $39.99. They're limiting it to '1 per collector' but I doubt they'll last long.

Good Luck,
Smiley

Went to an "out of the way" store today and asked them about it. They said it was "cancelled." ha.

In any case, if I find any, I'll let you guys know.

For those looking for the set at retail, I saw a few at a Coconuts here in Birmingham (the Summit location to be precise). Give that chain a look if you have one in your area. They were going for the low low price of about $35.

I can click on the "check preferred store availability" link and then type in a zip for my city (79109) and it brings it up as available.

You can still check store stock when the website says sold out.

Some CREEPY people showing up on Amazon now. Check out the guy with 7 ratings and 57% positive fb!

OK, I AM a seller, but some of these Fast Buck Freddies DO make me sick.

Digital, BB online states that Chelsea still has this in stock, if that's any help to you. BTW, they listed 86th St. as being out of stock long before they truly were.

The Movies Unlimited copies disappeared from Amazon literally within minutes of my post today, so hopefully some DVDTalkers got in on that deal (they only had 3 up, but may post more, you never know). It's still on their website, though, @$39.99.

Beats the hell out of us guys charging in the $60 range, though, eh?

Oh, well, at least I've managed to get more than 7 orders in a row filled correctly.

My local Hastings still had 3 or 4 at $36.99 each, so check there if you have one near you...

Anybody else get their dvd from Tower yet? They say the SE is backordered and that man is still processing. I don't think I've been charged yet. Would it be best to go out and grab one while they're still in the B&M's?

My Best Buy had loads of them next to the regular set today. Right out front, too.

It sounds like the SCARFACE giftset. After it first came out, it started to get really scarce and was selling for big bucks on Ebay. Then, supply finally caught up with demand, and now you can find those giftsets everywhere.

My local BB had some in stock as well for 32.99 + tax...over 35.00!, but I just ordered one from DVDplanet.com for 29.96 with free s/h. This was the only online store where I could locate one.

There were still 5-6 copies left at Best Buy (Auburn Hills, MI) yesterday for $32.99. As well as Circuit City. My tower.com order is still on backorder, I doubt it'll ever ship so I just picked one up.

My Tower.com ordered was just cancelled.

Fine with me ... I'll just hold out for the HD-DVD or Blu-ray release.
