Jarhead Collector's Edition - Cancelled **big chain stores will have it

Just heard from one of my distributors that Universal has canceled the upcoming 2 disc collector's version of Jarhead. No word on a new date or anything yet.

I guess universal knew how to quit him.

**edited for the update...
Large chain stores like best buy and Wal-mart will apparently have the deluxe edition.

Willh51 02-08-06 08:50 PM

A press release from 2-6 still had the two disc, is this cancellation correct?

+Danny 02-08-06 08:52 PM

At least it was a hilarious and appropriate use of that joke.......

Sunday Morning 02-08-06 08:54 PM

I learned of the cancellation yesterday (2/7)

Willh51 02-08-06 11:25 PM

Well that sucks then, hopefully it will still come out in some form.

Harry Lime 02-08-06 11:34 PM

ah crap! first i find out that The Passenger is cancelled and now this. :suicide:

joshtown 02-08-06 11:37 PM

Ugghh, Universal.

NatrlBornThrllr 02-08-06 11:43 PM

Were shipments canceled, or were they shipped and just won't be put on shelves? Wondering if this might end up as an Ed Wood type situation or not..

Harry Lime 02-08-06 11:47 PM

whats the "Ed Wood type situation"?

AnonomusBob15 02-09-06 12:01 AM

The Ed Wood DVD was cancelled, and made it to the shelves anyways, causing a frenzy and high value for the dvd. Then released later missing a bonus feature.

Harry Lime 02-09-06 12:16 AM

do you think this is possible for Jar Head if the release date is a month away?

NatrlBornThrllr 02-09-06 12:31 AM

Oh, I didn't know when the announced release date was. No, it's unlikely. The Ed Wood discs were shipped out to vendors and chains, then the chains were told that the release was canceled and ordered not to sell them on release date. Sam Goody and a couple of other stores apparently didn't get the memo and sold them for a week or so. That won't be the case here.

The regular edition is still coming. I'm Sorry if I didn't mention that in my original post.

ReduxGuy 02-09-06 01:45 AM

I hate Universal. I hope whoever ordered the cancellation dies a slow and painful (and violent) death.

Jarhead is one of my favorite movies from last year and I wanted an excellent set that covered the making of the film, not some barebones single disc.

neocheddar02 02-09-06 03:34 AM

shoot. I loved this movie, but would hate to have to double-dip on it.

Mr. Cinema 02-09-06 06:05 AM

I'm not too disappointed. I was planning on getting the single disc. I really liked the movie, but the 1-disc is plenty. It still has 2 commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and the extended news interviews.

pdjennings 02-09-06 07:21 AM

Odd... the press release posted just yesterday on DavidDVD still has it listed...

steebo777 02-09-06 08:03 AM

Bullshit man. I was looking forward to this release.

Kocheese99 02-09-06 09:01 AM

i think i smell a classic double dip opprotunity. I think universal might just bring it out 3 months later or something just to try to make some money. Either way it sucks to high heaven, i had it preordered.

Big Worms 02-09-06 09:57 AM

Damn it I was looking forward to the 2 disc.

. i think this is the case as well.

animatedude 02-09-06 10:54 AM

I KNEW IT!.trust me guys, this is goin' to be just like the Cinderella Man gift set.it will be out, but only a few of them.

slop101 02-09-06 11:00 AM

Sunday Morning, who's your distributor, and what sort of store do you run?

A similar thing happened with Universal's Cinderela Man collector's edition - a couple weeks before it came out, my local store said that his distributor told him that it had been canceled. Sure enough, he never got any collector's editions, but as you all know, the big chains, like Best Buy, Circuit City, ect. got it and it wasn't really canceled.

Oh, and it's still available on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...v=glance&n=130
And they're usually on top of this kind of stuff.

Mr. Cinema 02-09-06 11:03 AM

Still up for preorder at the usual online stores.

The best deal looks to be $27.98 shipped at Amazon

Fok 02-09-06 12:40 PM

they also probably release an ultimate ed on HD DVD

Patrick Mirza 02-09-06 01:10 PM

It's still listed on Universal's press site. Let's not call it dead yet.

Grizzly 02-09-06 02:00 PM

one can only hope they skip the single disc and release the 2-disc (sans the non-DVD bonus rubbish) for $29.95... as they should.

That's just what I was thinking, and hoping for.

Harry Lime 02-11-06 04:05 AM

I cant find one other source that says this has been cancelled.

digitalfreaknyc 02-11-06 08:49 AM

Shit. I've had this pre-ordered at amazon for a while...used a GC too.

as of thursday, it was still listed at amazon. i placed an order then and it has yet to be cancelled.

rasalas 02-11-06 02:39 PM

This report sounds bogus. Universal has already sent out review copies of Jarhead that include a watermarked movie-only disc (to prevent copying) and two discs with extras totaling more than two hours. This is not final-product configuration, of course, but this is the material that will be on the final release and it equates to a two-disc set. I received this review copy Friday.

Sunday Morning 02-11-06 03:20 PM

I will know later this week as I have a meeting with my distributor who will confirm what's going on with universal. She did mention that she believes it might be because someone is getting an exclusive on the deluxe edition. We shall see...

animatedude 02-11-06 03:50 PM

i do have feelings that these kinda threads are opened in here just to make ppl go and order the DVD....

Sunday Morning 02-16-06 12:34 PM

Apparently Universal has decided to only sell the deluxe versions to the bigger chains like Best Buy and the likes.

They did the same thing recently for the deluxe edition of Cinderella Man... Slop101 predicted it well.

This is further proof how the Studios are helping to drive the smaller guys out of business. Not nice.

there's another word I'd like to use these studios. Not nice = asshole-ish.

jmj713 02-16-06 02:05 PM

Well Amazon still has it up for preorder.

TheMovieman 02-16-06 03:54 PM

It's not true... at all. I talked with someone from Universal and it is not cancelled. So there you go.

Kocheese99 02-16-06 05:37 PM

well what i heard from our distributor is that its going to be alot like Cinderella Man where it'll be somewhat like a limited edition.

jmj713 02-16-06 07:57 PM

Just as long as my Amazon preorder ships :)

The Passenger is still up, as well.
