Personaly I use DVE for all my basic A/V setup needs. But if you're looking for more in depth test discs for really fine tuning your sound system, there are more specialized discs out there.

I bought DVE for video and it works pretty good. I don't like the menu system much though as I can never remember where anything is. Havn't tried the audio section yet. Someday I'll try out AVIA.

Avia hands-down. Had the original VE and DVE. The navigation on both really BITES. Even in repeated uses, I can never seem to find the pattern I'm looking for. Audio tests are so-so too

OTOH Avia has great test patterns, using flashing contrast screens which makes it much easier to adjust video settings properly. The audio tests are better too, with a better frequency scan to check sub crossover (and detect rattles too!) and better phase and balance tests between pairs of speakers.

FWIW, I gave away my VE and DVE and am keeping my Avia.

I have Avia and I've never used DVE but I remember reading that DVE's geometry patterns are faulty.

I have Avia which I picked up years ago. Works good for me.

Does any place rent the Avia disc? Netflix doesn't. They only have Video Essentials, but I don't want to use that one because most people prefer Avia.

I've used both and recommend AVIA over Video Essentials. It's easier to use and doesn't require the ability of your DVD player to display "blacker than black".

Whatever you choose, buy it. You can periodically check/realign your display.
