Basic Instinct : Ultimate Edition ----> 3/14/06

In the spirit of unnecesary double dippings, Lionsgates is releasing Basic Instinct : Ultimate Edition on March 14th, according to davisdvd.com . This time is has a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, so maybe it isn't as bad as Sony's trend in double dipping. More info here:

http://www.davisdvd.com/news/news.html

DavidH 01-23-06 05:37 PM

Ummm...where in that article does it stated a "new" anamorphic transfer? It sounds like the previous uncut version.

Either way, I won't be buying this again until HD. I think it's a Blu-ray release.

My bad. I misread and thought I saw that it was a new anamorphic transfer. So then, this is another unnecesary release, ala Sony.

ScissorPuppy 01-23-06 05:55 PM

Maybe it's a "new anamorphic widescreen transfer" in 1.78:1?

Q. What comes after this Ultimate Edition?
A. Extreme Edition

basaro 01-23-06 06:50 PM

for the lazy ;)
From DavisDVD.com:

This third go-around for the 1991 thriller will include the previously released unrated cut in anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 tracks. Bonus materials exclusive to this release will include a DVD introduction by Sharon Stone and "A Conversation With Sharon Stone" on-camera interview. Returning extras include commentary with Paul Verhoeven and Jan de Bont, "Blonde Poison: the Making of Basic Instinct," "Cleaning Up Basic Instinct Montage," storyboards, screen tests and trailers. Retail is $24.95.

basaro 01-23-06 06:56 PM

They are making a sequel of this! That's fuckin retaaaaded.

dx23 01-23-06 07:07 PM

Q. What comes after this Ultimate Edition?
A. Extreme Edition
Correct Answer:
A. Basic Instinct : Ice Picking, Leg Crossing, Sexy Unrated, Short Blond Hair, Beaver Edition

jimnysf 01-23-06 07:14 PM

No "Ice Pick" included this go-round?

TomOpus 01-23-06 07:33 PM

I already have my "Ice Pick" version. :nopanic:

Depending on the quality of the extras, I might get it.

milo bloom 01-23-06 07:43 PM

I have the Icepick version and a copy of the old release with the unintentionally hilarious DVS track. I think I'm done for now.

 I'll settle for the "Beaver Edition".

digitalfreaknyc 01-23-06 08:35 PM

Too bad they didn't do DTS like other countries.

PatrickMcCart 01-23-06 08:35 PM

They really need a trivia track on this.

A bubble with an arrow points to Mrs. Stone's furry friend with the text, "TRIVIA TIME: Sharon Stone was not wearing any underwear in this scene."

Willh51 01-23-06 08:56 PM

This should be cheaper because you can get the old SE for like 5.50 at Walmart. Nobody is going to pay $20 for this.

marty888 01-23-06 09:47 PM

Yeah ... no icepick, no sale.

animatedude 01-23-06 09:48 PM

that was an expected release but i know an online retailer that still sells the OOP "ice-pick" version, do you guys think i should buy the ice-pick version or wait for this release?

Geofferson 01-23-06 10:00 PM

I'll stick with the icepick version I have.

Since this is Lions Gate Film's, I wouldn't doubt it. :(

Too bad, as every review I've read of the current release indicates it has a somewhat marginal transfer. Why not remaster if you're re-releasing? Doesn't make sense. Unless these are just early details, and there's more information to come. Or, more likely, this is little more than a tie-in with the sequel, and was slapped together with minimal thought.

That was a joke. The film is actually 2.35:1. This is something Lion's Gate WOULD do. ;)

Julie Walker 01-24-06 01:34 AM

Since the unrated SE is out of print from the looks of it(it's not listed on many sites for example). I would definitely get this upcoming release if you don't own the film already. Though make sure it is in the correct aspect ratio before hand!

And for the record, the copies at Target and Wal-Mart for $5 is the R rated version. So that is best left avoided for obvious reasons:)

I found the Unrated version at Best Buy a few weeks ago for $5. Don't think I'll be upgrading.

DonnachaOne 01-24-06 01:48 AM

So the Camille Paglia feature is dropped? That's no fun.

fryinpan1 01-24-06 05:28 AM

This is just Sony being Sony.

dx23 01-24-06 05:30 AM

This is just Sony being Sony.
Actually, this is a Lionsgate release. I was only comparing them to Sony in the useless douple dipping practice.

Whoops, you are correct. The sequel is fron Sony Pictures though. Nevertheless, unless the transfer is improved this is a pointless re-release.

Dragonslayer 01-24-06 11:41 AM

I'll stick with my R2 DTS version with all the extras.

dvd_luver 01-24-06 11:49 AM

You would think Paramount would release Sharon Stone's other film, "Sliver" on dvd this date to cash in. Damn.

Only way I buy this dvd, is if there is rumored to be an easter egg that leads me to video footage of Stone's actual beaver. :)

I'm sure it will be in their exclusive "DVD Screen Format" 1.78:1

ShagMan 01-24-06 12:55 PM

I'll stick with my icepick release.

Ask and ye shall receive: DVDEmpire

CertifiedTHX 01-24-06 07:43 PM

Well, I dig the new cover art. But they have cut the commentary by Camille Paglia, and added the bits with Sharon Stone. Not a movie I particularly care for, so believe I will be passing.

--THX

meritocracy 01-24-06 11:52 PM

A completely pointless release. So they've apparently dropped Paglia's commentary and adding some tedious promotional fluff regarding the sequel? Thanks, but I'll stick with the icepick release.
