I went to Wal-Mart today to see if they might have it. They still had that empty spot set aside for it, but no actual copies.

I found this but it doesn't explain any 'why'. Only that Sony has removed it from their release calendar.

Seemingly reliable update from a Terry Jones fansite ( http://www.terry-jones.net/news.htm ):
May 2006

The Barbarians begins on BBC2 on the 26th May at 9pm.

Terry is appearing at this year's Hay on Wye festival on the 27th May, doing a talk on the Barbarians, and presenting the Director's Son's Cut of Erik The Viking complete with a Q&A afterwards. Tickets to both events are £8.

The aforementioned Director's Son's Cut of Erik The Viking will be released on a Special Edition 2 disc set in October. (Thanks Chica!)

Well, we're halfway through October. The website mentioned above shows this pic of the release:

Doesn't seem to be a date, though, other than the signing mentioned at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street, which I assume is in England. PLEASE tell me this isn't a region 2 release only!

EDIT: Looks like this edition was released on 10/9 in the UK on region 2 disc, as feared. Anyone know if they're going to release the same edition over here? This is so not fair.

I'm not a big fan of PAL but I might have to pick up the R2 release. It has both the theatrical and new directors cut.

I'm sure this is now out in R2 land - labelled "The Director's Son's Cut" because Terry assembled a shorter cut with the help of his son, Bill.

I spoke too soon. It arrived today:

Specs:

Disc 1

Director's Son's Cut (75 Min)
5.1 Surround
16:9 Anamporphic
English Subs

Commentary with Terry Jones
Interview with Terry and Bill Jones
Photo Gallery

Disc 2

Original UK Theatrical Cut (90 Min)
The box and disc SAY 4:3... but it is in fact 1.85:1 widescreen. I assume anamorphic, as it fills my Sony Bravia LCD, but I'm not sure if this set auto-compensates for non-anamorphic or not.
2.0 Stereo Sound
English Subs

The Making of Erik The Viking
Feature Reports
Extended Cast Interviews

Hope to give it a spin tonight
