And it doesn't affect the artwork on the disk either?

I guess some don't check out any of the "My disc won't play" threads because usually 1 person will mention boiling.

Not that I've notice on mine, nor has anyone mentioned. It should be fine if you stick to the recommended time and be sure to properly dry the disc.

I don't think it matters. It's probably more of the habit of having the data side down. It's probably more of the hot water rather than the bubble action that fixes the disc.

If you boil them too long, yes.

I would not have thought you were insane, but I frequent an Internet forum dedicated to dvds.

Tried it today with the Bela Lugosi DVD-18 and it seems to have made no differences. It still skips and freezes in all the same places as before on the Raven but it was worth a try.

I've tried it twice. With the first it helped the DVD, the second made no difference.

I thought you were gonna say the buyer left you negative feedback for giving him such a ridiculous sounding solution, but good to know there are still eBayers who aren't unreasonable asses.

I tried this once, it didn't help, but I only did it a couple of times.

Never heard of this before, but if it worked for him, I guess I'll try it next time. Bizarre sounding solution; I'm surprised he actually heeded it.

Does this work for Compact Discs that have light scratches and skip?

Hmm. I've done this with bass guitar strings, and it brings them back to about 2/3 their original brightness. Never would have thought of doing it with a DVD, though.

Anyone know of a good scientific explanation for why this works?

Hmm ... (edit) Do the discs seem to look less scratched after boiling?

This also helps for things other than scratches, my cousin had a DVD that had something on the data side of the disc, it was very, very slick (I have no idea what it was). After trying over and over again to wipe it off, we finally tried boiling it, and the DVD worked like a charm right after doing it.

Just like with other methods, this will not worth if the scratches are too deep.

I've heard this many times before, but I was wondering if I could get some clarification -

Scientifically (or as close to it as you can get), what does boiling do to the DVD and how does it make it better? Are there any long term side effects?

What exactly does boiling fix? Only scratches? What about unseen problems (see DVD 18 fiasco)?

Is this real?

If so, my copy of that Val Kilmer movie Twikoff is scratched too, maybe I should boil it?

?
I really have no true idea, but I have heard theories that it helps set the glue or that it gets rid of residue from the factory.

Cue the spate of threads in several years time: "My DVD-9s are falling apart. How do I glue the layers back together again?"

Oh CraP ! I misread the OP's post and boiled my DVD Player.

I may have to try this since I no longer have connections with access to a decent repolisher and I have a couple second hand discs that skip every now and then.
