This has to be the most valuable statement in this thread...which basically sums up everything that has been said up to this point.

There is nothing more to be added

I guess for casual DVD collectors, it's a fairly decent list, but we'll have to wait for someone with a few more active brain cells who can recall that 2005 also saw the realease of the Edison boxset, Jules et Jim, The Big Red One, the Controversial Classics Collection, those James Dean movies, box sets for Crawford, Davis, Doris Day, and enough quality Criterions to break anybody's budget.

I was gonna say even before reading your comment, that yeah, it's more of a list of the 'best things on DVD currently you'll be able to buy your friends and family for christmas' list.

This list is exactly what one would expect from Travers. Hell, just look at his List for 2004 and the responses that generated.

The mere fact that this year he decided to categorize his points under the headers "Hot Bonus" & "Killer Scene", should alone be enough to warrant a complete dismissal of any perceived validity.

When viewed in context of the entire list, the inclusion of a set like The Astaire and Rogers Collection, almost seems like a token throwaway choice, put there to remind us he has "ecclectic tastes" Sort of like if one made an alltime list that looked like this

1- Fast and the Furious (Vin Diesel is the shit!!!)
2- xXx (xXx Rocks your mother!!!)
3- American Pie (Who can forget the scene where he humps the pie!!!)
4- Bad Boys (Not bad for an older film)
5- Constantine
6- I, Robot (Awesome chase scenes!!!)
7- Underworld
8- Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (Fassbinder's profound meditation on the human psyche.)
9- Bad Boys II (How awesome was it when those guys started tossing frozen bodies out of the back of the van?!!!)
10- Blade II
11- Jet Li 3-Pack (Everybody was Kung Fu fighting!!!)
12- Reign of Fire (Fire up the Sub, Awesome ass pounding bass!!!)
13- Anchorman (I've seen it 700 times!!!)
14- Garbo - The Signature Collection
15- Unleashed

The difference is noteworthy in that the transfer was such a minor improvement and the extras so insignificantly enhanced (if you can even call them that), that it wasn't really worth a double dip -- especially considering how the film has gone on to become quite the cult favorite, thanks in no small part to Lebowski Fest. For instance, Jeff Bridges' surprise appearance and performance at the last Lebowski Fest West should have been an extra on this disc. There sure were more than enough Mini-DV cameras taping the event that night.

So while, yes, it's technically an improvement and certainly a worthy release (after all, the film's the thing), it could have been so much, much, MUCH more, rendering it a largely unworthy double dip. (And yeah, I know...that's just like my opinion, man.)
Agreed. As a fan I bought the gift set and felt so empty handed and that Universal/Focus Features could have done a million more things with this re-release. Still worth it for me for the improved picture quality, but this isn't entirely worthy of making anybody's top list of 2005, since the studio was so uninspired with this re-release.

I've said this in the music forum many times: Anyone who regards Rolling Stone as having any merit whatsoever is a total and complete idiot.
