Question on Ken Burns Baseball Box

Are there any differences between the Warner and Paramount pressings? It may be my old eyes, but I don't see a mention of the Charlie Rose interviews on the Paramount reissue.... also, is picture quality the same?

Thanks!

Don't have the old one to compare it to, but the picture on the new edition looks nice. I figured the only difference between the sets was the use of slimline cases for the newer one.

Now *this* is interesting. Just picked up the thinpak set at Costco for $80, with the intent of selling my original set. I noticed on Half.com that there is no inventory for the original set except one copy up for a fairly high price. Searched on the board and found this thread, which led me to a closer comparison of the two.

What piqued my interest immediately is that the outside of the old box says "25+ hours on 10 DVDs". The new box says "Over 23 hours on 10 DVDs". Checked disc 10 for the Charlie Rose interview. New box says it's there.

So, I looked down at running time. Old and new say running time is 240 minutes. So far, so good.

Move to disc one. Thinpak running time: 115 minutes. Original running time: 145 minutes. Uh oh.

So, here are the rest of the comparisons:

Disc New Old
1 115 145
2 106 154
3 120 140
4 146 142
5 125 151
6 151 176
7 133 159
8 114 141
9 145 173
10 240 240

Suffice to say, old set isn't going anywhere. But what is going on here?!? Just a warning for anyone else thinking of swapping out at the Costco sale.

I picked up the new set, and while I haven't watched the whole thing, I'm reasonably sure the runnings times couldn't have been cut that substantially. That's 20-30 minutes PER disc, and it just seems REALLY unlikely that the documentary was cut up that much.

I'm going to run disc 2 from both sets side-by-side, because it has the biggest disparity. I'll post something later.

So far (about 40 minutes in) the two are running precisely side-by-side. So it appears that there's a good chance that whoever put together the running times on the Paramount set was smoking something.

EDITED TO ADD: It's official. Nothing to see here, move along. The two ran perfectly in sync throughout. The running time on the *new* set appears accurate. The VOB files are dated differently, but are almost precisely the same size.

I'll check a couple of the others to be sure before selling. If anything noteworthy pops up, I'll post. By the way, the transfer on the "new" set doesn't knock my socks off, but it appears to be the same as the "old".

I rember thinking those running times on the first release were way off when I checked the remaining time indicator. Maybe they timed someone going through the extra features and added it.....or added the time for those horrible ads that one gets stuck with at the beginning (note to self: hit "scene selection", chapter 1 rather than "play"!).
