Maybe it's a legal issue:
From imdb.com
Miller owns the rights to both films now. Could be he's holding out for a better deal or something.
George Miller was slated to direct Contact until Warner Bros. offered him the rights to Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) to pull out and let Robert Zemeckis take his place.

Will we ever get the uncut version of Road Warrior? It was supposedly heavily edited by the Australian censors befor release. And then a further few scant seconds were deleted from the R rated U.S. version to avoid an X rating.

I'd definitely do a "happy dance" if one or both of these came out in an SE.

But it was pretty interesting. Someone mentioned details of the opening scene showing Max drive past a farm where the mohawk guy and his gang are.....shows the family dead. Then they go after Max..where it jumps into where the current film begins.
Some more graphic footage was mentioned for the arrow pulling out the arm sequence, the boomer rang scene...and supposedly the couple having sex under the tent(which is pulled away durring the chase) is sped up in the R version..but at normal speed in the uncut version.
I don't know how much of this is true, but it is interesting to hear about.

The Digital Bits is reporting that HD-DVD and Blu-ray versions of The Road Warrior will be released on 5/8.
Source: My Two Cents - 3/14 (4th para from the bottom)
I searched the internet and found this multi-tile release scheduled for 5/22 on the Warner site: Road Warrior/Beyond Thunderdome Double Feature. Not too many details. I wonder if this release will have new transfers.
Still no word about any Special Editions though. Has anyone heard anything?

The upcoming 5/8 Blu-Ray/HD-DVD will have an exclusive to the format commentary track with the Director and Cinematographer, but that's it for new extras for them, other than a Leonard Maltin intro.

I saw this Double Feature disc out today and unfortunately it's just the same material from the previous dvds. To make matter worse, both movies are in FS.
