Questions like these are always amazing. It explains the stretch to fill widescreen movies on the 16:9 tvs at best buy. Does no one notice the distortion? It's like when tv stations used to broadcast films that were in scope without using the scope lens, so everyone was really skinny.

Even more amazing, IMO, are many of the replies. So much time spent on ridiculing the OP, and for what?

I honestly don't even know why full screen dvds are made. It's like buying a book with 1/4 of the pages ripped out.

Just a little FYI, next time you make a major investment like this, be sure you do extensive research on the product, so you'll know exactly what your buying.

Just watch good movies and the aspect ratio doesn't matter.

Sounds like you made a mistake when you bought your TV. That's ok - it happens. Just send me your broken plasma one and I'll give you a brand new 51 cm TV. The next time you play a fullscreen DVD... voila! No black bars!

As for the other replies,
When you have a std crt t.v. for the past 15 years it gives little incentive to remember your dvd player actually does do the 16:9 mode.
I was well aware the T.V. was a 16:9 plasma before I bought it but just didnt put the time and thought into thinking i would need to make adjustments to my dvd player as well since I have had my system balanced/adjusted to where I wanted it for so long without having to make new changes.
Since eveything else is sony, I will wait for their hdmi to come out since I already have an extra hdmi cable.
As far as seeing demonstrations in a store, I rarely shop at electronics stores or even go in them much anymore, all my purchases are off the internet since sales tax, etc is so high where I live.

It's like buying a new, or a used car sight unseen from the internet, without test driving it, and how do you expect to know how a product operate without inspection, or demostration? You don't officially know what your buying if don't perform these buying tasks. No one would make a final decision to purchase anything without viewing the product in person, and demostrating it. If you want to be a smart shopper in the future for any A/V hardware electronics, I would strongly recommend to you to browse at high end, state of the art electronic stores in person (not the internet), and to look, demostrate various of products, so you'll have inclinations, and knowledge about the product you are potentially buying. The salesperson will assist, and answer any inquiries you may have about the product for your comprehension. As I stated prior, do extensive research on the merchandise before you make a final decision.

Nope, I mean it. Aspect ratio is not the bottleneck when it comes to understanding and appreciating film. Taste, intelligence, imagination, open-mindedness, and critical and analytical ability are far more important than seeing the sides of the image.
