They Live: Is there a good version out there?

Is there a good version of this movie out there? I’m talking about the one with Rowdy Piper. I've read there are versions with colorized alien scenes when they wear the glasses. Also is there one with an anamorphic transfer?

If you know how to go region-free, then yes, the R2 release is great.

And it has one of my favorite commentary tracks, by John Carpenter and Roddy Piper.

I recently looked on dvdcompare.net and they were somewhat at odds in their assessment- they like the R2 version over Region 1, but R2 is cropped whereas R1 is 2.35:1.....I'd like to pick it up just for the JC and Piper commentary though

If you have access to HDNet Movies, they're showing They Live in high-definition (and in its original aspect ratio) throughout November.

Whoa! Thanks for that tip! Looking forward to catching that in HD.

I've never heard any such thing about any DVD of this film, I can report that is not true of either the original R1 disc from Image or the R2 SE disc.

Did Ted Turner get his hands on "They Live" too?!

Why would they colorize it? The black and white was done intentionally by John Carpenter.

The color thing is an urban legend created by an idiot 'reviewer' on amazon.com who thinks the current releases are 'censored'.

So don't believe anyone who claims a color version of the 'glasses' sequences exist.

This current DVD release from Universal Studios is a 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer. I have it in my collection.

I see that all R2 releases are 2.10:1. Does anyone know why this is? That means it's cropped on the sides just slightly, right? Any chance of a R1 re-release with the commentary? A film like this, unlikely, I'd say.

The Region 1 DVD from Image, was released approximately six years ago is now out of print. Universal Studios re-released the DVD (Region 1) in 2002.

The R1 is a great version of this and is OAR. The R2 is cropped but has extras.

I have both. The R1 has the correct aspect ratio and a much better transfer. the R2 has a great commentary track with john carpenter and roddy piper, but again, not only is the image cropped, the picture quality is poor.

Why no commentary track for R1?

Yes, I know. I was just offering my knowledge regarding possible improper coloring issues as to the 2 versions that I own.

The R2 commentary makes the DVD worthwhile. Piper goes at it in the commentary. He does make some remarks in regards to wrestling in the US and the people in control if it (not good). Really interesting discussion with Carpenter. I think there are some exclusive rights that Universal provides to the UK company that makes some Universal releases in the UK.

Remember people selling the OOP original DVD at insane prices.

Man I refused to pay those prices, and was glad when UNI finally got off their butt and released the DVD a couple years ago.

It's funny seeing those military guys using the exact same PKE meters from Ghostbusters as Walkie Talkies (or sensors?).
