Since I'm insecure, I too have prepared an explanation of my draft. Please keep this in mind during future rounds of voting as well :) ...

I realize that, against many of the other collections here, the main weakness of my collection may be the lack of classic films. However, I have tried my best to include the contemporary classics. That said, if I had to characterize my set of 10 I would describe it as "variety with a theme".

The films I chose cover the genres of Sci-Fi, Comedy, Foreign, Fantasy, Horror, Drama, and Animation. I have tried to include such cult classics as Big Trouble in Little China and Legend, and some newer cult favorites, such as Donnie Darko and Freaked. And I have tried to pick films that have been milestones or high water marks in their genres, such as Alien, Aliens, Oldboy, The Fly, and Akira.

I've also made sure to include films by landmark directors such as Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Cronenberg, and Katsuhiro Otomo.

And because any DVD collection needs more than just films, I included a TV series (a complete series rather than only one season because for me I feel having only one season of a show makes the collection somehow incomplete) and a very comprehensive music DVD package.

But I tried to hold everything together by a common thread, and that is that everything is wonderfully dark, twisted, and/or offbeat. And though you may feel that some of these films are less than stellar, I hope we can all agree that they are all wonderful attempts at storytelling. And isn't that what it's all about after all ? ;)

Oh yeah, and I made sure that every release in my collection presents the film/show in their best quality, with tons of special features, and that the number of total discs is quite hefty ;)

... phew.. ok, I'm done! :)

LOTS of excellent collections and mixes of genres. Often times it was hard to pick a clear winner and it came down to my having a biased affection for certain titles that showed up in a list. Good luck to everyone!

1. TylerDurden_73 - A little anime heavy, but his picks of Lion King and Cowboy Bebop(which was huge) affected my strategy
2. Franchot - closer than I thought it would be, Fly 2 and Predator 2 kill TNAJason, who has 2 movies in common with me
3. das Monkey
4. jfrost - the only collection I fear. I loved exharrison's last draft and I love this one, but jfrost drafts DVDs loaded with special features better than anyone
5. The Ferret - SPR is my favorite movie on either list, my next 7 are all Ferret's
6. Count de Monet - terrific 1-2 punch
7. Mrs.Nesbit - I couldn't believe Chinatown went undrafted last time
8. Toben - close matchup, both drafts I seem to vote for the guy with the Akira Tin
9. jpfisher - damn, 2 heavyweights! I know jpfisher didn't draft Office Space, but it's just so cool that's his #1 pick when you see what follows
10. kylerayner - neither does it for me, but Sunset Boulevard and Glengarry Glen Ross are my only 2 must owns on either list
11. LBCrazyFool - hate Bambi & Tommy Boy, but I'll vote for this guy until he plays someone with 10 DVDs I love
12. ryuryu2949 - I was looking at 7 out of 10 of this guys picks the round he took them. Spielberg, Hitchcock, Scorsese, Kubrick, and Ridley Scott are represented by their opi, arguably. Not to mention John Woo and Ken Burns, definitely. Trainspotting and The Killer could be the 2 most rewatchable foreign films for me of all time. So how the hell is this guy losing?
13. Sweet Baby James - Film Noir collection puts it over the top
14. arsmith7 - 2 picks in common with my last draft
15. Cathepsin - very diverse across time, genre, and country of origin

In my collection I choose to go with the dvds I liked and not focusing my picks on classics and popular choices.

A perfect example would be Bubba Ho Tep. You have a good movie and good special features like Bruce doing a commentary as Elvis. Stuff like that makes a good DVD compared to a classic movie that lacks in the special feature department.

Cleaver, thanks for your kind words with regard to my collection. I too am amazed that I am currently trailing in my round with mbs (pairing 12). I mean, let us take the easy comparisons. First, the tv picks, Lost vs. Civil War. Now, Lost is a highly enjoyable show, but it is just so... new. I am curious to see how Lost will hold up after 10+ years. The Civil War on the other hand, pretty much redefined historical documentary filmaking. It sets the standard.

Next, the box set picks. Some good films in the Controversial Classics set, but it just can't hold a candle to the wonderful WB Hitchcok set. For those who may not know, the Hitchock Signature Collection includes: Strangers on a Train Two-Disc Edition / North by Northwest / Dial M for Murder / Foreign Correspondent / Suspicion / The Wrong Man / Stage Fright / I Confess / Mr. and Mrs. Smith. With the exception of North by Northwest, all of the other films were released with new editions/transfers for this collection. The 2-disc Strangers on a Train also some wonderful extras.

As for the remaining picks, I have what is most often thought of the most in-demand OOP Criterion (The Killer), A Kubrick masterpiece with wonderful extras (Spartacus), a loaded edition of Trainspotting, and perhaps the two most-requested dvds before they were released (the Goodfellas special edition and Schindler's List). In short, I think my collection is classy, has loads of special features, and is diverse in directing and acting style, genre, and time period (how many other collections, have films from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, AND 90s?).

I won't go into too much depth with my criticism of mbs' collection (although Heat, Eternal Sunshine, and American Psycho are good picks), but I just want to note that there are serious picture quality issues with his edition of Brotherhood of the Wolf, and that, imho, Amelie could be the most overrated film of the past 5 or 10 years.
