Anybody else heard anything about a Scanners re-release?

Last night I watched the special features on the second disc of the Videodrome DVD and I thought that it's about time I got Scanners on DVD.

I've been on a Cronenberg kick lately with the release of History of Violence and the Collectors Edition of the Fly.

Anyway I had passed up Scanners several times before thinking "I'll come back and get that another time." Today I went to Best Buy to get it and they had no copies. They recently re-arranged things at my local store so I thought well maybe I'm just not looking in the right spot. They have always had at least 3 copies on the shelf.

So I asked the guy in the media department if they had any copies and he said no they were pulled because MGM was planing a 25th anniversary edition. I hadn't heard anything like this and I am usually pretty up to date on these kind of things.

I was just wondering if anybody else had heard of anything like this.

It doesn't make sense that they would pull the old ones because of a planned new edition. We'd have empty DVD shelves at every store if that was standard practice!

Are you region-free? Because Anchor Bay has put out a great edition in Region 2 UK. I haven't heard anything about MGM's plans for any improvements to the U.S. edition...

There's nothing wrong with the current one. Some bitched about certain scenes being out of sync with the talking, but it found out that it was done during post-production and had nothing to do with the DVD authoring.

If it was done like the new The Fly SE, I'd go for a nice SE of Scanners for R1.

I might be tempted to pick up an SE of Scanners if it had a Cronenberg commentary, but if not I'll just stick with the current release. I adore Cronenberg, but Scanners isn't a favorite of mine.

1. You took a Best Buy employee seriously?

2. It's not standard practice for ANY store to pull a release simply because a new edition is coming out. If anything, they put the old edition on sale or hype it up so they sell off their old stock. That is, if they're in the business of making money. Be that as it may, I also find your story extremely odd given that my BB still has old editions of The Fly and several other double dippers. Sometimes they even stock the two editions side by side.

I didn't really take the Best Buy employee completely seriously, that's why I asked you guys here, This guys a little crazy and always tries to talk to me at lengths about to make himself sound more intellegent. Not too long ago he was telling me about the new Genesis Video Show (I'm a Genesis fanatic), I had been looking at it and he just started talking to me, He was telling me about how Genesis used to be fronted by Peter Gabriel but they are most known for the Phil Collins stuff. He's a nice guy but I don't think he knows what he's talking about some of the time.

The thing that tipped me off about the Scanners SE is that he got all technical and said well it was released in 1981 and they have a lot of back logged Cronenberg material they can put on the new edition.

I didn't really believe him but I guess I wanted to because the new Fly CE is absolutly amazing.

Wrong. It is standard practice at Suncoast. Not this far in advance, though.

At Circuit City a few weeks ago we did pullbacks on titles that I know are being re-released such as Sound of Music and Office Space.

It's true; Gabriel was a co-founder of Genesis and Collins came aboard in the early 70s. Gabriel left in '75.

Anyway this guy sounds like a typical bullshitter.

Yeah I knew that Gabriel was the co-founder of Genesis I was just stating that he just goes on at lengths about some stuff that is common knowledge.
