Is Ballad of Cable Hogue some kind of comedy too?

It's light of tone, elegiac, wistful, romantic - don't expect Blazing Saddles, but it makes me smile.

I just saw this for the first time last month and was pleased. Yup, a bit of comedy all throughout including a few unexpected "Keystone Cops" moments.
Still a good movie overall. Can't wait to have my hands on this set.

So does PG&BTK have both versions on it? Is that what the "1988 Turner Preview" is supposed to be?
Reply
Yes, the 1988 Turner preview edition is what appeared on laserdisc, and I think, tape as well. I guess the studio version that hacked the original to pieces is (thankfully) gone for good.

Does anyone know about the never before seen additional scenes from the Wild Bunch? And why they weren't incorporated into the director's cut?

Sight unseen I'm giving this set my highest praise: I'd pay MSRP for it.

i don't think it would go over well to add more scenes to a director's cut. Peckinpah was happy with this cut, and since he is long gone, it should not be revamped, retouched, or re-edited. I think it goes well for supplements, but it wasn't needed in the film.

I agree Cameron, but I was unaware any additional scenes even existed. I've read of the different cuts, but never about the content of those scenes.

any reviews for these pop up online Yet?

I've seen both versions of PG&BTK and perferred The Director's Cut (Without Dylan's lyrics for "Knockin' on Heaven's Door") but I think I'll be alone on that when this set comes out.

How do these westerns compare to the Leonne westerns? I just ordered this blind. I'm trying to build up my western collection and from the sounds of things these sounded pretty good. Thanks

You can feel confident putting these beside the Leone's or any other westerns, in my opinion. With the exception of PG & BTK,which was compromised by it's maker and the studio, these are essential westerns. Also, there's a bit of cross pollination between Leone and Peckinpah, particularly in The Wild Bunch and Cable Hogue that you might find interesting. Also,if you're into commentary tracks, the four experts gathered here provide some of the best tracks in the business. Besides, the spirit of John Ford is looking down on both of these directors so you can't go wrong there.

I want this but I've been trying to buy less stuff. Hmmm. About $20 for Wild Bunch which I already own (natch) and another $21 for the other three which I've never seen. Guess I'll keep an eye on prices.

Best bet right now is Costco at $37.99

That doesn't do much for those of us without a Costco.

I have Costco but I may just show patience and go for the mid-year DDD sale (yes I know there's no guarantee etc). That would make it around $34 shipped vs. about $40 w/tax at Costco.

That would give me time to rent them at Netflix and decide if I end up wanting to buy them. I rented Wild Bunch from there and ended up buying it. DOH.

Has someone heard if there are any missing extras? On The Ballad of Cable Hogue, there's a vintage featurette that appears to be missing.

Finally picked up this set yesterday.

Skimmed though Wild Bunch and was surprised to find some audio-edited inclusions. At the big shoot-out at the end, Pike and Dutch yell out a few swear words (Believe me, I've watched this thrilling sequence enough on TV and video to know that I've heard them) but nope, they're not on this disc! (Not sure if the snapper of this had them before because I don't own it)

Along with the previously mentioned "Cable Hogue featurette" (I'm assuming it's the one that you briefly see on Sam Peckinpah's West), did anyone notice anything else missing elsewhere?
