Battlestar Galactica 2.0

Universal has sent over early details on Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.0 which stars Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Michael Rymer. The three-disc package will be available to own from the 20th December this year, and priced at around $49.98. The first ten season two episodes will be presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. We have no word on extra material for this one yet, but we'll bring you further details very shortly.

Hmmm...seems a little expensive for half a season, but I kinda like not waiting until the second part of Season 2 airs to get the first half, especially since I've been watching this show on DVD.

onebyone 10-03-05 10:48 AM

To get it right away or to wait and see if they release a regular box, that is the question.

pinata242 10-03-05 10:52 AM

Posted this in the other BSG thread when this 2.0 set was brought up. From The Digital Bits:

Universal has announced the DVD release of SciFi's Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.0 on 12/20. The 3-disc set (SRP $49.98) will include the just aired first half of the show's second season - 10 episodes in all, plus extras. As with the first season, the episodes will be presented in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. We expect the bonus material to include all of Ron Moore's podcast commentaries, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes and an extended version of the mid-season finale, Pegasus (that according to Ron himself). FYI, the latter half of the second season debuts on SciFi in January.
That and it was mentioned that Universal has it on their site for $37.98. Don't know if that's a sale price or actually a lower MSRP.

Chew 10-03-05 10:54 AM

Did Moore say he recorded an extended podcast for the mid-season finale? That commentary is going to sound a little weird if it's not via extended branching.

Dmacsg1 10-03-05 11:14 AM

Good Lord!! Why oh why are they doing this half season bullshite!?? I personally would rather have the whole season in one set.

Linn1 10-03-05 11:44 AM

Yep, ain't no way I'm paying that for half a season.

kakihara1 10-03-05 12:59 PM

for the most part we all knew this, but it's still very sad:( they had better do a complete Season Two box.

nodeerforamonth 10-03-05 01:21 PM

I'll get it. I never catch it on TV. Like the fact that I can be more current at it than I would if I waited for the full season.

Linn1 10-03-05 02:21 PM

But...

the price is just slightly cheaper than the price for the newer boxset with the first season AND the original mini-series. It's just clearly a move to make more money off the fans.

kakihara1 10-03-05 02:45 PM

Ya don't say ;)

Hell yes it is, Sci-Fi/Universal know they have a huge hit on their hands so why not milk it for all it's worth right? :(

cajun_junky 10-03-05 03:09 PM

I don't mind them releasing this half season as long as they release the full season at a later date. I do see how some people that don't have cable or have time to watch the show could stay a little more current.

The only problem I see with that is that then they'd have to release both a second half and a full season set. Since they've already committed to this half-season crap, it seems unlikely to me that we'll see a full season set. It doesn't make market sense to do both. Definitely not for a while at least.

I agree with this, unfortunately. This move is clearly to take advantage of the critical buzz this show is receiving. But what a pain in the ass to have to buy two sets for one season. I am going to avoid this one like the plague.

Of course, i full expect these half-season sets to have exclusive extras that any full season release probably wont have. That way, completists would have to buy both sets to get all the extras.

Dr. DVD 10-03-05 03:30 PM

Will this be a Best Buy exclusive like the UK version? That was a quick decision.

Could be worse though. Just look at the Star Trek. :(

Why does it seem unlikely to you? Of course they will release a full season set..just because they are trying to rip off people who can't wait or miss the shows on TV - doesn't mean they don't realize that can't get good sales off a full season after its over.

Is there a precedent for this? Although it is late, I can't think of any tv shows that have done this. Maybe BSG is breaking new ground!!

Joe Molotov 10-03-05 11:00 PM

Well, they did kinda do that with the Miniseries. They released it seperately, then when Season 1 came out, it included the miniseries.

forumsmy 10-03-05 11:23 PM

Look at the Andromeda series - partial seasons and then full season sets.

So history shows that half and whole seasons are being done. I do not know how well they have sold though.

Christi P 10-04-05 12:26 AM

Sex & the City released season 6 in two parts, both at full price, even though each set only had 8-10 episodes. They still havn't released a 'complete season 6' set.

It looks like Battlestar Galactica is following that precedent.

chanster 10-04-05 07:11 AM

I doubt Galactica is following the "Sex and City" path. For one, Sex and City was on premium cable. Secondly, it was the last season of a highly anticipated show.

Everybody screaming bloody murder that you will have to buy the two parts is way too premature.

That one came as a huge shock to me, I couldn't believe they included the miniseries in the season one set. Now my copy of the miniseries just takes up shelf space:(

pinata242 10-04-05 09:07 AM

Like I said, if there will be a full season set, it won't be for a while until after the 2 half season sets have fully permeated. If they release a 2.1 set and a full season 2 set simultaneously then they are wasting potential. Is there a precedent set for such a release? Hopefully we'll get wind one way or another if there are any plans for a full set sometime in the next 2 months so we can all make decisions on actual information rather than speculation.

Jericho 10-04-05 09:16 AM

If they do sell a full season set, it will probably be just a combination of the half seasons, a la Farscape's original season sets. I doubt it will have more content, but it may contain a price break.

True, but did all the extras make it?

kakihara1: You do know BestBuy released an exclusive set that had only the 13 regular eps and not the mini right?

Heat 10-04-05 10:39 PM

For what it's worth, DDD has Season 2 listed at $36 (release date of 12/20/05).

And there's no way I'm paying that much for this set.

By the way, any word on whether any new episodes have been, or will be, filmed? These twenty episodes (the ten that just aired and the ten starting next January) were all filmed this past spring.

My mistake, I guess the deleted scenes aren't on there. I thought the featurette was though?

Yeah but the problem with that is that BB won't be releasing exclusive sets everytime. If they were going to I would have bought it because I do prefer the Sky One opening sequence but I want continuity both in the video presentation, and shelf appearance.

I thought it was funny......on the BB site when I checked out the differences between the two sets they were sold out of the exclusive but had the U.S. release. When I showed up at the store they had tons of copies of the UK version but only one copy of the U.S. version.

mifuneral 10-05-05 08:09 AM

TVonDVD has an update on Battlestar Galactica 2.0 including coverart and a vague idea on the specs.

I especially like this line:

Want more? You got it! Look no further than this boxset if you want to see exclusive sneak peaks of upcoming episodes before they air!
LOL! So, episode previews are now being touted as valid reasons for the insane $49.99 MSRP? I have no idea why TVonDVD is defending this idiotic release when the fanbase itself is shaking its head in confusion.

pinata242 10-05-05 08:28 AM

Wow, hope no one sees that cover before finishing season 1. Nice spoiler there, Universal.

The Sci Fi Channel has renewed Battlestar Galactica for a third season. The new version of the 1978 TV science fiction classic is currently in the midst of its second season on the Sci Fi Channel.

Spoiler:
Boomer wasn't confirmed to be a Cylon until late in the first season?

Where does it say we support the release of the show this way? We're reporting on the set, nothing more.

Gord

pinata242 10-05-05 08:53 AM

Hey, Gord, have you seen anything to corroborate the Bits' extended episode claim?

cajun_junky 10-05-05 09:22 AM

Awesome news on SciFi picking BSG up for a 3rd season! I guess this is no surprise with its popularity and growing fanbase.

The way it was...
Spoiler:
we found out that Sharon was a cylon at the end of the mini-series but the people on the show don't find out till she shoots Adama
Of course I know you already knew that but just for clarification sake.

man that's why I don't look at covers for seasons of shows I haven't seen. I caught my old roommate looking at the Sopranos covers while he was still watching season one cause he firgured out that was a good source for "who makes it", but I guess he ruined it for himself.

I have a feeling this show may see a very long run, for good or bad.......you make the call.
