Same here. All ten of my picks are movies in my collection and they are all different from Groucho's game. I had nothing to lose changing up my line-up since I went down in the very first round last time.:)

ViewAskewbian 10-06-05 09:37 PM

My choices are all from my collection and I tried to not choose anything that somebody else had picked in a set (although not picked the LOTRs discs were tough). Wanted to mix up my team although my initial thought was to go all classics. Still, I have some Oscar Winners, Some AFI Top 100, some cult classics, an Emmy and Peabody Award Winning TV Series, the highest grossing film of all time (after inflation), the film, in my point of view, that changed the face of cinema and ushered in the new wave in the late 60s/and 70s and, also in my point of view, the greatest superhero film.

Let us see where the mix takes us come game time. :)

Nesbit 10-06-05 09:41 PM

Yeah I didn't feel great about selecting the theatrical editions because I really prefer the extended editions but having all three films as one pick was too tempting.

I believe that Scott27 took this title in the 8th round. Sorry.

For the last draft I bought The Sting the day after I drafted it just because.

Yeah.. it definitely made things a little more fun. If we do this again I'll try to stick to those limitations as well -- BTW, my cheat title was Day for Night... wanted to throw some Truffaut in there, but had already used my CC picks... I do plan on picking it up off eBay at some point, even though it's OOP at the moment.

Re: Infernal Affairs -- Very solid flick, visually impressive. I'd recommend it to everyone as well.

Looking forward to seeing how the voting goes!

Someone said they were going to rent Yi Yi after I picked it last time for that reason. I like that aspect of this game. Sharing the love of good movies. I just noticed that my foreign movies were vastly underrepresented and tried to find a good one that had an R1 release. Far too many good movies still have no real R1 release.

I thought about picking this title as well, but the R1 release is just lacking in terms of extras and such.

I'm not quite sure what the criteria is supposed to be for those who are voting.. are they voting based on A) the quality of the movies in the collection, or B) the quality of the disc contents (loaded SEs preferred over bare bones), or C) a little from column A and a little from column B? I would think that it would be option C.

arsmith7 10-07-05 09:18 AM

They are voting on whatever they think is most important I guess. I assume some will be more likely to vote for rare DVDs, others with lots of extras, and then even others care about nothing except the quality of the movies.

He Selected Predator 2 not Predator.

The voting may have to start a little later today... I emailed my info to my work email address, and when I got to work... it was not here. If it shows up, voting will start soon. If not, it will start late afternoon.

I'm using "C" for the most part, although my own personal criteria is a little more organic than a 50/50 split between movie and extras. I'll just take a step back and look at the overall package. For instance, if I have to choose between a great film that has no extras and a lousy film that has fantastic extras, I'll easily side with the former. Or if it's a great film with tons of extras versus an equally great film with no extras, I might not automaticaly pick the former but rather look at the overall list and see how those two films fit in with the rest of their "teams." If I'm completely torn between two movies, the quality (not quantity) of extras could end up being the deciding factor.

jpfisher 10-07-05 11:11 AM

I made my picks based more on the quality of the film than anything -- although I tried to pick editions that did justice to the films with transfers, I felt that including Breathless was important even though the Fox Lorber release is subpar. Office Space was not my pick, of course -- I do enjoy the film very much, but don't think that I would have picked it if it had been up to me, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

I could have picked something like the Criterion edition of Armageddon, but at the end of the day that is still Armageddon.

But you must remember... this is a DVD draft... not just a movie draft :)

jpfisher 10-07-05 11:29 AM

And as I said, a great DVD of a s***ty film is still a s***ty film at the end of the day.

So, are people in the draft able to vote on other players teams?

Yea, that is the way we did it last time. BTW jfrost, any update as to when this thing might kickoff?

In my opinion, yours is the best of the 32 lists from the standpoint of film quality. We evidently share a lot of the same tastes (Godard, Herzog, Lang, Truffaut, Kar-Wai, etc.). Good luck to you.
