I would expect it to be in the 5.99-9.99 range, honestly.

THanks for the advice. I'll just rent it then prob.

Not to thread jack.. but I am getting married on Halloween and we are throwing a huge halloween party. I want to have a screening room set up in the mansion we are having the reception at so that people can relax and watch something halloween / horror related. Problem is.. we have a ton of kids that will be there, so nothing in my horror collection is going to cut it. Anyone have any suggestions for a kids halloween title that is roughly an hour and a half long.. preferably a cartoon of some sort? I was eyeing that Heffalump Halloween title..

Eric D. 09-17-05 03:26 AM

I always like Hocus Pocus as a kid. It's not a cartoon though. Oh and congrads on the wedding!!!

DeadWalk 09-17-05 01:22 PM

Congrats on the wedding also (and very good choice of date! my brother got married on Hallowe'en two years ago and it was the BEST party I have ever been too).

Anyhoo, I digress. Films for the whole family you could play at the reception would have to include Hocus Pocus as Eric D. mentioned. It's a must! You could also screen Ghostbusters, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the '92 original), A Nightmare Before Christmas, Watcher in the Woods. If you wanted to be a little adventurous (and introduce some people to some real classics whilst your at it) you could try Cat People/Curse of the Cat People from the Val Lewton Collection (although I don't think they would be suitable for the very young). For the adults in a late night screening you really should go with the best of all - Hallowe'en!!!

I hope you have a great day!!!

As to recommendations for general Hallowe'en viewing (or at any time for that matter):

The Frighteners (looking forward to the upcoming director's cut release)
They (Wes Craven presents...)
Boogeyman (2005)
Darkness Falls (I know it gets a lot of bad mouthing but I enjoy it)
Children of the Corn (the original)
Shaun of the Dead
28 Days Later
Suspiria
Scream
The Fog (well, pretty much anything by Carpenter)

My fiance has decided that we will indeed be going with Hocus Pocus for the room, which is perfect because I already owned it! Thanks for the help Eric D. and DeadWalk!

Patrick Mirza 09-17-05 03:40 PM

I wish they'd release the original The Stepfather. Terry O'Quinn is genius in that. What a great flick!

I see you guys have already made your decision but I thought I would suggest Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1958), I've loved that movie since I was little. It's definitely a spooky cartoon that kids can get into. Congrats on your nuptials.

If you go region-free, you can scoop it up. I know it is available in Australia, at least.

Apparently El Día de la Bestia (The Day of the Beast) is back in print and available at Xploited Cinema. It's region 2 PAL, the one I own. Very cool flick.

I recommend The Eye ("Jian gui"), a horror film from Asian (Hong Kong in this case) about a blind girl surgically getting a new set of eyes... that see more than regular eyes. This movie has a very creepy atmosphere and (IMO) is one of the best of the recent Asian horror wave.

Just watched a fun 8O's movie called Just Before Dawn. It's very much like Wrong Turn with crazies in the woods!

campy... The Hideous Sun Demon

randyba 09-27-05 11:48 AM

To the guy having the party/wedding. Casper is one that you can play for the kids in attendance.

Toben 09-27-05 12:44 PM

Ginger Snaps. Also Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, and Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning.

Skip the HoKey Pokey, go with The Nightmare Before Christmas. If I would have had that when I was a kid I'd be even more warped than I am now.

How old are the kids? Gremlins is a good choice as long as you're not talking about kids under 7. Or you could just throw on Cannibal Holocaust and let 'em live a little...

That is one of my favorite in the Asian Horror Genre, well really in the horror genre itself. I've had the Eye 2 sitting on my shelf for a few weeks now and still haven't had a chance to watch it. I probably catch that and RIng 2 on Saturday to start Shocktober off right.

joliom 09-30-05 06:39 PM

The Korean horror/thrillers Whispering Corridors and Phone are also very good if you like stuff along the lines of The Sixth Sense, The Devil's Backbone, and Stir of Echoes.

Eric D. 09-30-05 07:23 PM

Speaking of The Eye, has anybody seen the sequel?

Yeah. I didn't like it that much. In fact, I don't really remember much about it even though I only saw it a month ago. There are one or two decent scares, but that's it.
