Annoying Packaging Trend

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but I keep buying more and more dvds with shrinkwrap that sticks to the spine of the dvd case. It is very unsightly and very difficult to remove. Any recommendations for removing this shrinkwrap that seems to be fused to the case?

Automator, obviously you never read that other post too well, because that one was about security stickers. Scrimshaw was commenting on shrinkwrap, an entirely different packaging phenomena. Shouldn't this thread be in the Annoying Packaging Trend forum?

Scrimshaw - I hate it! There's no way to tell whether the shrinkwrap has melted to the plastic case without first buying the disc. We are paying huge sums of money for these discs, and the factories mess up the packaging.

My advice is to keep a few empty cases onhand and swap the disc, cover and insert booklet over to an unmelted one. Blank keepcases are really coming down in price these days; a store near me sells Amarays for 18 cents apiece.

I think the melting is happening because of the new high-speed manufacturing process not allowing things to cool.

Theories, world?

I don't know, but it certainly isn't new-it's been happening for at least a couple of years. It seems that Fox's DVDs are the most affected.

Yep, I hate it...After peeling away all the other BULLSHIT, I have to make certain the temp on the "shrink-wrap machine" wasn't set too high and left a trail of goo on the spine.

Hell yes this pisses me off.

And, YES, I am in a bad mood.,...

I hate when I find out AFTER I remove the shrink wrap, that some stock boy was a little overzealous with the box cutter opening the case slicing every dvd down the spine.

On the shrink wrap? No problemo here.

Yeah, I've noticed that Fox dvds are the worst for this. I'll probably take your advice Disc-Flipper and buy a bunch of blank cases. I don't understand why studios put so much work into their new releases only to skimp on the manufacturing process - faulty/scratched discs, no inserts, cheap packaging.

Usually I don't care about such petty complaints but this one I have to agree with. Only lately this has been happening to me though. You can either purchase new cases to exchange for the shitty ones, or return it to the store and look like an idiot. Either way it's a hassle. I just bought Welcome Back Kotter and this happened with it damn it.

I've never tried it, but I wonder now if a suggestion from the other thread mentioned in post 2 might work -- that is to use the security sticker or a piece of tape to pull off any remaining shrinkwrap left on the spine after opening. Maybe.

This does NOT mean, however, that the snarky suggestion to "Use the SEARCH button" is any less annoying or pretentious on the part of some members who crown themselves Duplicate Thread Police or that the thread cited had anything to do with this thread.

I'm just saying.

You can get some pretty good deals when you buy DVD cases in bundles or lots. I buy them for reasons like this great topic as well as for my home made DVD movies. Just don't buy the cheapest ones.
I've used some pretty strong clear packaging/shipping tape to help remove any residual security sticker/ over heated shrink wrap that melted to the DVD cover. It works great on the stickers and so so on the melted plastic. Just stick it on, rub it in and pull it off fast or just blot it.
If you ruin it than use a back-up blank DVD case.

This is pretty obnoxious when it happens. It just happened to me very recently with my Transporter Special Delivery Edition, yep, it's a FOX title!

I also noticed plastic sticking to the spine in a few of my DVDs. But it's not as big of problem for me as DVDs that are scratched up or DVDs that either freezes or skips.

I never see this a problem. I know what everybody is talking about, but I have no problem taking it off.

I've noticed this as well. I really didn't think much of it since the condition of the case doesn't matter to me at all. As long as the DVD plays fine, I just don't care about things like inserts or bits of plastic on the case.

Shit! Why don't I ever pay attention to what I'm doing when I'm making fun of people.

Because like so many other people around here, you are in too much of a rush because you think making fun of people makes you look cool?

This is definately annoying as hell. It's like the shrinkwrap gets melted to the spine of the case. Oh well, it's not as bad as when you pull of the security seal and a strip of the cover art gets ripped off too. That REALLY pisses me off. Now I look at every DVD I buy to make sure the cover art is not shifted up and stuck to the seal.

oh yeah, the ripped artwork is the worst. Yesterday I ripped the cover of Barton Fink and the stickers left residue on all three sides. Rather than try and clean that off I just keep a dozen empty cases on hands to replace bad ones. But not much I can do about the cover. I'll have to watch closer as you mention.

I hate this as well, but I've figured out a pretty good method for avoiding this. First, if possible, look through all the copies of the dvd you want to buy and try to find one that doesn't have the cover art overlapping with either the top or bottom security strip. If they are all overlapping than just pick one. Next, start with the end (either top or bottom, but usually not both ends) that has the cover art overlapping. Now, if it's the top part of the box, slowly peel the security strip up on one side (either the front or back of the box). Then, flip to the other side and slowly peel the top up again. Now, remove the label. If it's the bottom, you basically do the same thing, only peeling down of course and on both sides once again. This way you can normally prevent damaging the box art instead of just peeling the label off in one fell swoop. I hope this makes sense to you guys because it's not that easy to explain, but it has worked for me 99% of the time. Also, you can use the sticky side of those peeled off security strips to remove sticky residue on the box that the strips leave behind, but never use them on the cover art itself because it will damage it. Basically I just stick it to the part of the box that has the residue then quickly sort of pull it off. Takes the sticky residue right off.

Well, to be fair, this has been discussed before.

BTW, I am cool. My mom told me so.

The first DVDs I remember seeing with this were the James Bonds that came out a few years ago.

does anyone else have an suggestions on getting rid of the shrinkwrap on the spine of the DVD? (other than replacing the case in general) I usually have no problem getting it off, but I just bought Crash the other day and the plastic won't come off.
