Are there any DVD buying rules in your family?

Are there any DVD buying rules in your family?

What I mean by that is, I live with my parents and both my dad and I purchase DVDs, although I buy a lot more and more often than my dad, and our main "rule" is that I can't buy any Clint Eastwood DVDs and my dad can't buy any Robert DeNiro DVDs, I own all the DeNiro and he owns all the Eastwood.

Anybody else have any "rules" like that?

I know it's kind of stupid but I was just curious...

The Turbanator 09-02-05 12:35 AM

We don't have any rules. Just a reccomendation.

"Stop buying so many freaking dvds!"

chipmac 09-02-05 04:17 AM

Nobody else buys any DVDs unless they ask me simply because nobody knows if I already own it. After the first 100 they lost track.

FantasticVSDoom 09-02-05 07:22 AM

Make sure the bills are paid...And even that one isnt a "hard" rule.

spartanstew 09-02-05 08:35 AM

When I lived with my Dad, there were all kinds of rules. Now that I'm a "grown-up", there aren't as many rules.

Basically the only important DVD related rules are
(1) if you want a movie tell me so I can find the best price and version
(2) the kids do not touch my movies - only their movies
(3) no scary movies until the kids go to bed
(4) no movie is loaned out until I have seen it except under special circumstances
(5) any movie leaving my house must be on a list so I know who has it

There are probably more but that is the big ones that I can remember this morning.

I concur on the first three points. Numbers 4 and 5 do not apply in my case since I will not loan dvds to any family member (living outside of my house).

only one, if I double dip on a movie, the first disc edition has to be sold, given away. It's a space issue, too many discs here and there in the tv room, makes significant other a dull (angry) boy.

The only rule I have is that if my wifes buys a DVD it has to be widescreen.

talemyn 09-02-05 12:25 PM

Regretfully, I'm the only one in my family who thinks that DVD buying rules . . .

Wait . . . did I misunderstand the question?

Spiky 09-02-05 01:11 PM

Our only rule is that my wife ask if we own it before she buys PPV!!

viking99 09-02-05 01:25 PM

a) I buy the DVD's and everyone else watches them.
b) No DVD gets loaned out to ANYONE. I will however provide directions to Blockbuster free of charge.
c) If you leave finger prints on my DVD you will be subjected to extended harrassment, including idle threats of not being able to watch my DVD's any more.

Jon2 09-02-05 02:28 PM

1) Don't get me a DVD for a gift unless you know it's one I want.

2) I don't loan my DVDs, period. Particularly to my sister-in-law, her husband and their two kids. People who should not even be allowed to own a DVD player, let alone watch DVDs.

3) My wife does, when I'm not around, and they always come back with smudges and fingerprints

4) What's more important? A wife or a DVD collection?

Hmmmm, got to think about that.

That is funny but a rule that I left out. My wife ordered an on-demand movie and guess what......I already had it on dvd.

Brian Shannon 09-02-05 03:54 PM

I buy what I want when I want it.

Anomaly 09-02-05 04:10 PM

I don't have any rules for my DVDs, because nobody can access them. I lock my door when I leave (there isn't a key hole for it, you need a toothpick to open it) and my collection is in a glass case, which is locked at all times. And I'm the only one with a key for it.

kornboy 09-02-05 04:20 PM

None, considering I am the only one that buys them in my family. Well, my sister does at times.

Al Padrino 09-02-05 04:40 PM

I don't share. My mom has her DVDs, I've got mine. I've never been great with sharing something, so if she owns a particular title I want, I'm likely to eventually get one for myself down the road. I just don't like the idea of co-owning something that can be had for a relatively inexpensive price.

mr_jbloggs 09-02-05 06:08 PM

Yes, my wife just told me the rule, Don't buy anymore DVDs :-)

onabudget 09-03-05 04:39 PM

Three simple rules:

1. When buying DVDs, make sure that the widescreen edition is the one bought. If not sure that there is a widescreen edition available, do some research.

2. Check the dvdplanet wishlist before buying gifts. No deviation from such specific list is allowed.

3. No loaning of DVDs, unless the other party let's us borrow one in return at the same time.

Quack 09-03-05 04:52 PM

I just pay bills first and then I buy, not as often as much as I did.

Filmmaker 09-03-05 05:01 PM

Just this one: get the fuck out of my way on Tuesdays!

IDrinkMolson 09-03-05 05:20 PM

Not neccesarily rules but questions:
Don't you already have that one?
Didn't you buy enough this week?
What are you going to do with all of those?
