The Simpsons Season 6 - The non-packaging discussion thread

I figure I might as well start it.

Discuss anything about the Simpsons Season 6 DVD set here EXCEPT the Homer Head or replacement case. ;)

Disk errors, commentary or extra feature issues/questions, etc.

Some info can already be found here:

I've already gone through all the commentaries for the first disc - they are GREAT!

David Mirkin (show-runner during season 5/6), is one of the best dvd-commentators I've ever heard. He's full of good info, he's funny and he has a genuine excitement for doing the commentaries that really comes through - a lot moreso than the very dull Al Jean / Mike Reise from the previous seasons. Those guys would get a lot of basic Simpsons info flat-out wrong, Mirkin, however, knows the show backwards and forwards like a good producer should. Not to mention, he's got a bit of a dark mean-streak that is either sarcasm, or bitterness - I can't tell, but it adds immensely to his comments.

So beyond being a completely authoritative source, he's also very entertaining - check out his closing comments on the clip-show.

Spoiler:
It was Maggie who shot Mr. Burns!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to cut out the eyes, tie some string on the back, and use it as a Halloween costume. http://home.earthlink.net/~dvdtalk/images/scared.gif

...Or display it as a novelty item on the DVD shelf.

Either way...it's cool. :cool:

The episode was probably long, so they cut the normal opening sequence. Not a glitch.

Jaime_Weinman 08-17-05 11:39 PM

Wow, I have the exact opposite reaction to Mirkin; he sounds like a funny and creative guy but he's an awful commentator. All he seems to do is:

a) Explain the jokes;
b) Say how great everything is, and I mean everything -- he is unwilling or unable to criticize a single aspect of any episode or anybody's work;
c) Say how wonderful celebrities are to work with;
d) Make fake "ironic" comments and then say, no, he's just kidding, he loves everybody, everything's great.

Jean and Reiss are far more informative and willing to be self-critical at times (especially Reiss). I got more information from Jean/Reiss's commentary on "Round Springfield" (like Jean's discussion of the infamous cheese-eating surrender monkeys line) than all Mirkin's comments combined. I'm looking forward to hearing Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein on seasons 7 and 8, too, because they too seem more informative than Mirkin.

I noticed that too. According to the SNPP episode capsule, there was a couch gag in the original broadcast:

The family's eyes all run in in darkness -- and when the
lights come on, the bodies run in after the eyes. The
bodies sit down on the couch and lean forward, sticking
their eyes in their sockets with a popping sound.
Recycled from 1F06.

Nothing else seems to be missing from the episode, and the missing couch gag was reused from from the 5th season, so its absence is more puzzling than annoying.

Thanks for your help JerVL/kg,Skoobooz this might answer my question.

majorjoe23 08-18-05 11:56 AM

Is there any mention of Matt Groening's absence on the episode with the Critic?

danganet 08-18-05 05:04 PM

My bedroom dvd player (a Pioneer) wouldn't play Grandpa vs. Sexual Inadequacy on Disc 2, even though my living room player (a Panasonic) played it fine.

So you're having trouble in the bedroom with trouble in the bedroom?

El Kabong 08-18-05 08:51 PM

When you got to the individual episode's menus for the second time (after the animation stops), you can select the episode number in the mug shot. It plays the episode, but is it anything special? It seemed like the normal episode to me- although I just watched the beginning. Since "Play Episode" is right below it, I don't know why it would just do the same thing? And also, has anyone ever found the "baby talking machine" easter egg from 2 or 3 seasons ago? It was listed as an extra on the box, but months later no one had founf it yet. Has anyone figured it out after all this time?

According to the "Fear of Flying" commentary, Sideshow Bob Roberts is indeed supposed to have a very abridged opening sequence due to the length. So the DVD is correct.

SuprVgeta 08-18-05 11:36 PM

Hmm I didn't realize this was out already, going to have to pick it up. This season has tons of good episodes.

manicsounds 08-19-05 05:37 AM

Any luck with Easter Eggs? Found none so far.

Although an interesting thing, on each Episode Menu, I was able to click the number each character was holding in the photo, and it leads straight to the episode, nothing different. Don't understand why that is, since PLAY EPISODE is right under it. Unless I missed something....

Quake1028 08-19-05 06:54 AM

Is anyone else having trouble with the subtitles? None of the eps on Disc 1 would work for me, and on Disc 2 only the first 3 episodes worked. Could someone check this out for me?
