Any DVD news on these four:

Invasion Of The Dinosaurs
Death To The Daleks
Terror Of The Zygons
The Android Invasion

I'd like to complete my Sarah Jane Smith collection!

It certainly won't be this year, as the remainder of this year's UK release slots are already spoken for, so it'll be 2012 or 2013 for all of those.

There's a rumour floating around that 2012's "UNIT" boxset will consist of the final two Tom Baker UNIT stories (Zygons and Android).

EDIT: Just saw this bit of info on Roobarb's that would seem to disprove at least half of the above rumour (i.e. Zygons being in the UNIT box):

With 'Terror of the Zygons' a long way off (as the classicdw twitter feed said during the 'Robot' tweetview) [Android Invasion] is probably going to be paired with a Pertwee story in the Unit Box.
Bet they're holding 'Zygons' back so that they have a few bone-fide classics to end the range with (along with the technically-challenging Pertwees), so they're not in the same situation as the VHS releases, where a lot of the clunkers were the last to be released.

Classic DVD production update
Chuck Foster • Today, 5:57 AM

Some news on future DVD releases emerged at the Fantom Films conventions held over the weekend:

Back in 1964, the story Planet of Giants had originally been filmed as a four-part story, but had the latter two episodes combined into one in order to tighten the plot for a better paced series opener. Though the original recording no longer exists, actress Carole Ann Ford, who played the Doctor's grand-daughter Susan, mentioned at the Dalek Invasion Earth convention that she had recently recorded an audio version of the original script for that fourth episode, The Urge to Live, which she believed is to be for the DVD release of the story.

Further 'lost' material also seems likely to see the light of day. Back in 1979 the final story of Season 17, Shada, had to be abandoned due to BBC strikes with only parts of the studio sessions completed; appearing at the Timelord Tales convention, both Victoria Burgoyne (Clare) and Daniel Hill (Chris) reported that they'd been involved in a new audio recording of the script for the unfilmed material, in which other original cast members participated including Lalla Ward (Romana). There was also some speculation over how the missing scenes would be recreated in animation. Again, it is believed this will form part of a DVD release of the story in the future.

A recent fire at the Sony warehouse facilities in Enfield led to loss of much of the DVD and CD stock held there, including Doctor Who DVDs due to be distributed by 2|Entertain. However, the company has reported that this will not affect the release of Day of the Daleks, due out on the 12th September (available to pre-order).

The Restoration Team have recently revived their website that delves into the technical issues involved in restoring the classic Doctor Who stories for DVD release - the site had been in mothballs since The Space Museum/The Chase back in January 2010. The site is in the process of being brought up to date, and new articles have now been added for the first Revisitations boxed set and for Mannequin Mania.

Further snippets for DVD production have been tweeted by the Restoration Team; this includes an appeal by Chris Chapman for anybody who could provide contact details for Peter Walker (the young boy in The Reign of Terror) - if you can help please let him know.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

That's neat, but what do they about portions concerning old Doctor and/or actors/actresses that have passed? Are there old recordings they are splicing in audio? Or will they simply have stand-ins to do those parts?

The Valeyard 08-23-11 12:46 PM

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

They'll either get stand-ins for those roles or choose to narrate them instead.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Hmm, I don't have a problem with them creating animation to fit the original audio, but I don't think I care for the idea of new audio and video. That's getting too close to George Lucas territory for my liking.

Glad to see the Restoration Team website will be updated again, a lot of the tech stuff went over my head but it was neat to see the dedication of the folks poring over snippets of tape and film to recreate the show.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I think Planet of Giants and Shada are both special cases. As it says above, Planet of Giants was originally a four parter and then consolidated to a three parter. I'm sure the transmitted version will be intact with an option to watch the four part version as an extra. Sort of how they did Curse of Fenric and Battlefield. I'm surprised they didn't do the same with Silver Nemesis.

As for Shada, they really can't do much with it without creating new content. They stopped shooting midway through production. Most of the six part story just doesn't exist. I hope they include the original Tom Baker interstitials from the VHS as a bonus feature.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Maybe I haven't read enough about it, but why didn't they just pickup on Shada after the strike was over and finish it back then?

The Valeyard 08-23-11 06:42 PM

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Location filming in Cambridge and the first of three studio sessions at BBC Television Centre were recorded as scheduled. The second studio block was affected by a long-running technicians' dispute. The strike was over by the time rehearsals began for the third recording session, but this was lost to higher-priority Christmas programming.

Attempts were made by new producer John Nathan-Turner to remount the story, but for various reasons it never happened and the production was formally dropped in June 1980. Nathan-Turner was eventually able to complete the story (so far as was possible) by commissioning new effects shots and a score and having Tom Baker record linking material to cover the missing scenes. The result was released on video in 1992, but has never been aired on television – making Shada the only Doctor Who television story never to be broadcast. In October 2010, Dan Hall of 2 Entertain confirmed that a DVD release of Shada is in production and at present the plan is to release it with another title.

Interesting stuff. Guess it's good they're really giving this stuff so much extra attention.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Shada holds a very special place in the hearts of Who fans. I literally jumped around in excitement when I held the VHS tape in my hands back in '92. I remember reading stories of JNT trying to get the story done. If I remember right, one attempt was a Christmas Special with Peter Davison (as the Doctor) telling the story to either a group of children or friends or something like that. I have tons of Doctor Who books and one of them gives all the juicy details of the strike and JNT trying to salvage what he could before just dropping bits into The Five Doctors.

Big Finish did a pretty good job of re-imagining the story with Paul McGann and Lalla Ward.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

In one interview JN-T said after he took over as producer, he asked the BBC about getting extra episode slots to finish "Shada" or to get it aired as a special if they were to finish it (since it was already half complete). He said he was told he could complete the story if he wanted, but if he did, all six broadcast slots would come out of Season 18's allotment. JN-T admitted that he was a little 'greedy' and wanted all of Season 18's episodes to be "his", so since the BBC wouldn't add any additional slots (and since JN-T wouldn't give up six episodes of the season for it), "Shada" was never completed.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Just so everyone knows, the Restoration Team were not able to fully restore the colour on Invasion (of the Dinosaurs) episode 1. What they're doing for the DVD, though is this:

the default viewing option will be a B/W part 1 with the remaining episodes in colour. There is an alternate viewing option (using your DVD player's "angle" feature) which will allow you to watch that first episode with their "best attempt" at colour recovery, along with the rest of the serial.

Legend (the people who did the colourisation work on Planet of the Daleks) jacked up the price 3 to 4 times what it was last time, putting it out of reach for the budget (coupled with a weaker pound-to-dollar exchange rate). Also, the "blue" chroma dots were either missing or incomplete, making their ColourRecovery process less than perfect. So, at least they put their best efforts at CR on the disc (some of the blue was added back in--by hand).

Same here. Does seem odd that they can't use color examples from the other five eps to get an idea of how to do the first one, but as long as the episode is there I'm fine with it.

That's not the issue. The issue is that Legend (who actually do a really good job of colorization) priced themselves out of reach. The Restoration Team had to do the job themselves, and colorization is not their strong point. There was also a problem with the source material that hindered computerized coloring. All this means that the finished result is not up to the team's high standards, so B&W is the default viewing mode.

Which I am totally cool with, by the way.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Series 6.2 and Series 6 sets have been announced according to TVSDVD. Not too keen on the full set artwork (follow the link).

The truth about River Song is out and the time has come for the Doctor to face his greatest demons. Venturing across centuries and galaxies, the Doctor, Amy and Rory will encounter the greatest war criminal in all of history - and Hitler. Together, they'll discover there's no scarier place in the universe than a child's bedroom, and a visit to an alien quarantine facility will reveal to Rory a very different side to his wife. In a hotel where walls move, corridors twist and rooms vanish, death lies waiting. But the Doctor's time has yet to come. He has one last stop to make on his final journey - an old friend needs his help and an old foe must be defeated. But time catches up with us all and the Doctor can delay no more. By the shores of Lake Silencio, in Utah, all of time and space hang in the balance. And a NASA astronaut is waiting.
The above spoiler-ish studio description of Doctor Who - The 6th Series, Part 2 accompanies today's announcement for BBC Video's releases with the remaining 6 episodes of the current season (which only began broadcasting two Saturdays ago). The 2-DVD set will cost $24.98 SRP, and the 2-disc Blu-ray version will cost $29.98 SRP; both will be available on November 8th. The episodes consist of "Let's Kill Hitler," "Night Terrors," "The Girl Who Waited," "The God Complex," "Closing Time" and "The Wedding of River Song"; these run approximately 270 minutes. Also on board are a pair of "Monster File" featurettes, one about "The Antibodies" and the other about "The Cybermats". Package art for the DVD and Blu-ray releases can be found below; Amazon.com's advance listings aren't accepting pre-orders yet, but should begin to rather soon..

Also announced is Doctor Who - The Complete 6th Series, available on November 22nd (2 weeks after the half-season set, and on the day before the 48th anniversary of the original show's BBC premiere!). That title is a 6-disc set available on both DVD ($79.98 SRP) and high-def Blu-ray Disc ($89.98 SRP). All 13 episodes of the sixth season will be on board, starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill. Also included on these 645-minute sets will be the 2010 Christmas special, "A Christmas Carol", with guest stars Michael Gambon (the Harry Potter films), Laurence Belcher (X-Men: First Class) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins. For the regular season, Alex Kingston (ER) returns as "River Song", and so does Caitlin Blackwood (Gillan's cousin) as young "Amelia Pond". Other guests (spoilers, sweetie!) include Mark Sheppard, William Morgan Sheppard, Frances Barber, Lily Cole, Hugh Bonneville, Suranne Jones, Michael Sheen, Dan Starkey, Simon Fisher Becker, Nina Toussaint-White, Albert Welling, Imelda Staunton, Ian McNeice, Meredith Vieira (The View, The Today Show), and the return (from last season's "The Lodger" episode) of James Corden and Daisy Haggard as "Craig" and "Sophie" .

While the BBC Video announcement states that the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Doctor Who - The Complete 6th Series will have "hours of extras" on each 6-disc set, they didn't provide any details about what that bonus material will consist of. We expect the same supplements found on the separate half-season sets to be on board, of course, and surely we'll additionally get the usual commentary tracks and cut-down Doctor Who Confidential episodes. But that's just our own speculation (i.e., we're guessing), and we'll bring you the official list of extras as soon as its available.

We'll also bring you the finalized package art for The Complete 6th Series just as quickly as we can get it, but for now we've got an early look at the boxes for you at the bottom, as taken from the e-announcement of distributor Warner Home Video. And underneath that is an online trailer for the second half of the season, as provided by the studio. Check it out:

It does say special features are TBD, but I'm curious how much from the previous Christmas Special will carry over. I'm not usually big on extras, but I will be disappointed if it's the concert that is dropped. I really don't relish buying the Christmas Special on its own.

I think we were fairly sure that wasn't going to happen. My wife actually ordered the Christmas DVD by itself a little while back while filling out an Amazon order. So, I guess I'll just get the complete season set and have two discs of the Christmas thing.

Unless of course we watch the Proms thing once and decide we never need to see it again.
