I'm thinking of this like Daleks' Masterplan, Tenth Planet, Power of the Daleks, etc.

I'd like to see them do these as well, but I think I'd rather wait until a few others are done, assuming the process and outcome gets better each time.

I know it's unlikely that they will do this for every serial with missing episodes, but it's nice t see they are working to do what they can to get as many stories out as possible.

True, but it absolutely sucks that Troughton's first story is lost forever.

Are you saying not even the audio exists?

I don't think he was, but if so, every episode of Doctor Who (even The Feast of Steven) exists in audio format.

Personally, I would not be tempted at all to buy a release where more than half of the episodes are missing, let alone one like Power where 100% of the episodes are gone. I think they should (at least for now) stick to animating the missing episodes to stories where more than half of the episodes exist (which is the same policy that determined which episodes got their own "separate" release in the VHS range). This would mean Reign, Tenth Planet and The Ice Warriors.

It appears they are still scouring Africa for lost episodes... but nothing is showing up. Sucks.

Hmm, I don't see what that has to do with it. If there's a chance to restore every story to a visual medium, I'm perfectly fine with it.

Had to wiki The Feast of Steven, interesting story there.

If at some point they released a classic serial that was entirely animated, I would definitely pick it up. A lot of them have been lost or destroyed and I'd much rather have some sort of visuals than just stand-alone audio.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

As I mentionned in an earlier post, not only ALL missing episode audio have survived but EVERY missing serial/episode have been reconstructed in visual form using existing clips (sometimes 3-5 seconds but sometimes 4-5 minutes like in Galaxy 4's case), set photos, some really basic computer animation, captions, etc. by a gang of dedicated fans called «Loose Cannon». It's not animated like the stuff they did for Invasion, but its fun to see Dalek Master Plan or Evil of the Daleks or Underwater Menace or The Highlanders in their entirety. The BBC did this with the 4th episode of Tenth Planet on their VHS release. Some are better done than others too.

Valeyard said he used to distribute the VHS for these years ago. I have them all and transfered them to DVD-R but I'm not sure it would be legal to share them? Loose Cannon say we shouldn't on their site at any rate. But that was years ago when VHS was still common. Now?
In any case those who still have VHS should check their site. It's free and its great to discover some lost gems.
Good news about Reign of Terror!!!

At some point I'd like to get VHS reconstructions from Loose Cannon and transfer them to DVD. Right now I don't have the time to undertake something like that though. It would be cool though to have them on DVD though and hopefully I'll be able to get to it in a few years.

Depends. The extras are one thing, but supposedly, they were able to improve the admittedly below-par picture quality on this release, so if you thought the picture quality was a bit lacking, it's probably worth it for that alone (same thing goes for Spearhead From Space, when/if it makes the transition to R1 land).

This doesn't really affect me as I buy the R2s anyway, but you R1 guys probably shouldn't take it for granted that all of the Revisitation titles are a "lock" for R1. I suspect that BBC/Warner are going to be keeping an eye on how well this one sells and use it to decide whether to port over the others. Remember, the special edition of Remembrance was supposedly a poor seller in R1. If not many people double-dip on Talons, you might not see the rest of the re-releases in the US.

For those interested in that sort of things Big Finish Audio have a series of audio plays involving two of the secondary characters from Talons of Weng-Chiang (that's apart from their wonderful Doctors 4-8 series of adventures) The series of Edwardian mysteries with a supernatural twist (vampires, aliens, living dead, etc) Jago & Litefoot is quite fun and well made. Nice to listen to on your ipod while taking a walk to the market or on the bus...

http://www.bigfinish.com/Jago-and-Litefoot

I'll take that anytime over a second reedition of Talons. Although an excellent DW story, I find that the bonus features tend to go round in circles...

Just watched my first new Who, the Planet of the Dead special. I figured it'd be a relatively standalone experience, and I know Michelle Ryan from the Bionic Woman series. Is it fairly representative of the series: interesting plot, somewhat cheesy alien costumes, quirky British wit?

I don't recall absolutely loving this episode, but it's certainly not bad by any stretch. I think you've got a good shot of enjoying new Who. (Best to start with "Rose", with Chris Eccleston's 9th Doctor).

BBC is releasing for North America a special boxed set that collects all of the David Tennant episodes. It appears to be DVD only, but does included the animated episodes he did as well. I don't know how the extras compare to those in the Series sets. 11 October; MSRP $199.

As much as I enjoy the David Tennant stuff, I'll pass. All I'm missing in that box set is Season 3 and the animated episodes. And I wouldn't expect it to get a Blu-Ray release, Superman07, since they didn't start producing the show in HD until the Planet Of The Dead special (The Next Doctor in the Blu-Ray set of the specials is an upconvert).

I know there wasn't BR until the specials. I just pointed DVD incase anybody was wondering. I don't think it would make much sense to mix and match BR/DVD anyway.

Thanks! I expect I'll like it and figure I'll start with the complete Eccleston series 1 when I'm ready to embark.

That's a nice box, but of course I'm only missing one of the animated features so I'm not interested in a whole double dip. It would be great for someone just getting into the series.

Another expensive set that has the discs housed in sleeves that are guaranteed to scratch them up over repeated use.

There's a Half-Price Books near me asking $40 for a used copy of Talons and $80 for a used Carnival of Monsters. The mind, she boggles.

Well the current Talons release is OOP, so prior to the current announcement, it would make sense that it was higher priced (unless it just went OOP just before the rerelease was announced). Makes more sense to wait and get a release that will presumably have better video quality and more extras.

Not sure about why Carnival Of Monsters is going that high...

According to UK reviews, the picture quality on the 'revisited' Talons is, indeed, improved.

That's another 'revisited' (in the UK) title. Perhaps the original US release is going/has gone OOP and getting replaced with the special edition released in the future, too?

Anybody that'd pay those prices would have to be either out of their mind or completely clueless.
