Question About Criterion Licensing Studio Films
In the article it says:
"Criterion licenses selected titles such as The Life Aquatic and Hoop Dreams from studios and producers, paying a royalty fee that is often comparable to the wholesale price realized by suppliers on the titles"
Does that mean if Criterion puts Rushmore out on DVD they have to first give the studio $12 or $14 dollars for every DVD they sell. So, the studio is ensured the a sale for the DVD that would be no less than if they didn't allow Criterion to do their version?

I will attempt to answer your question as much as I could and I hope you understand that with your request you put me in a very uncomfortable situation considering the fact that I am not an industry-insider.
First of all I think that the answer to your question very much lies in the statement that was released to news sites and media sources that cover the film distribution industry. With other words, Image gained the rights to distribute Criterion’s catalog in a rather exclusive deal. This means, at least for me, a more flexible and vital distribution network with much more exposure and hopefully better release coverage as well (for example, as I assume you know rather well, outside of internet sources such as this very forum and dedicated fans that follow the label's output, for the average DVD consumer Criterion is not your typical name that everyone recognizes the way the do Disney). So, with the Image deal Criterion will definitely gain better market exposure.
Second of all, unlike the HVE deal where Image gained control over the company de facto Criterion is still an independent label. This should very much answer questions such as “are we going to see more Buena Vista titles via the Criterion label”…the answer is: It is up to Criterion to negotiate and finalize a deal with BV if they determine that a certain film is worth their involvement. Hence, Image will have no say whether or not Criterion should pursue a certain film that is property of Buena Vista.
Last but not least, UNLIKE the HVE deal Image will not be granted access to the human resources network that Criterion currently operates. In simple words there will be no direct lay-offs instigated by this distribution deal. In fact, to be honest with you I very much share the opinion others have echoed on this forum that with this specific deal Criterion and Image simply made an existing relationship official, an approach that does not apply to the HVE/Image consolidation I explained above.
This is what I could summarize for you so far based on all of the info provided by the two parties.

Major.........so Criterion has to guarantee the studios that they'll pay $5-8 dollars so that the studios get at least what ever they would if the film were released without Criterion. And then they probably get another cut.
