Re: nightmare on elm street box set
Did anyone buy the new box set that came out on April 13, 2010 to coincide with the release of the 2010 remake with Jackie Earl Hailey?
I assume the picture quality has to be a lot better since the original set came out in 1999 the dawn of DVDs where the picture quality was not always the greatest?

As for this new set, it almost undoubtedly contains the exact same transfers. New Line repurposed the same transfers from the box set for individual releases, and then later used them again for the two Nightmare "4 Film Favorites" sets (which have their own thread somewhere around here). Not only is it very likely they've done the same thing again, but this set won't come with the features from the 2-disc Nightmare, or any of the Disc 2 features from Freddy vs. Jason.
Maybe by the time the remake hits home video, you'll see special editions of the sequels. Until then, the only one you can get "remastered" is going to be the original, either as the Infinifilm 2-disc set, or on Blu-Ray.

1996 was the "dawn of DVD", not 1999.
Maybe only 2 people had DVD players in 1996 and 1999 was still early where the majority of people were still using VHS.

Yeah, well, the point being, through 1996 and most of 1997, they were doing primitive discs, like some of the very early New Line titles. By 1998, the idea of the Special Edition had started to catch on, and by late 1999 and through into 2000, some of the first really massive DVD SEs had been produced, like the Fight Club 2-discer, and the T2 Ultimate set.
