Do you make a point to watch certain DVDs on certain holidays?

I noticed on one of those "what are you watching this week" threads that several people had planned to watch the Independence Day DVD on July 4th, which makes sense. I recall purposefully saving the extended branching cut of ID4 to watch at a July 4th party one year. For Christmas, there are a bunch of obvious holiday classics but I think I'm going to try to watch Love Actually this upcoming holiday. For New Year's, I think I'll dig out When Harry Met Sally. For Valentine's this past year we watched Roman Holiday, and for next year I could see myself watching either Before Sunrise/Before Sunset with my wife or one of our favorite romantic comedies.

Does anyone else do this sort of thing too, and if so, what DVDs do you like to watch on what holidays (or other special occasions)?

MasterofDVD 07-06-05 12:43 AM

I watch a number of Christmas "classics" during the month of December. Things like Scrooged, Bad(der) Santa, The Nightmare Before Christmas and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation are absolute must watch movies.

I also watch Groundhog Day each year on the appropriate day.

mndtrp 07-06-05 12:46 AM

I attempt to watch Christmas Vacation every day in December. I'll at least have it running in the background while I'm doing something else.

That's about the only one.

Cygnet74 07-06-05 12:48 AM

when someone i admire dies, i often compelled revisit their work.

paulringodaman 07-06-05 01:10 AM

Planes, Trains and Automobiles EVERY Thanksgiving!

mifuneral 07-06-05 01:11 AM

not really, though I guess I do watch Nightmare Before Christmas around Halloween.

darkflounder 07-06-05 01:40 AM

Memorial Day - The Best Years of Our Lives
June 6 - Saving Private Ryan
July 4 - The Patriot and ID4
September 17 - A Bridge Too Far
December 7 - Tora Tora Tora

Kind of have a thing for remembering our war veterans.

The Infidel 07-06-05 02:14 AM

Scrooged on Christmas.

Not that it has much to do with DVD's, but I seem to remember one of the TV networks always showing Wizard of Oz on Easter. Anyone else remember that?

The Ferret 07-06-05 02:22 AM

There's a few Christmas movies I watch every year in december.

Also, not really a holiday but I make a point to dedicating a night each to Lawrence of Arabia,The Godfather I/II, and the LOTR's during the summer. Speaking of which, I haven't seen the above since last year and look forward to seeing all very soon!

hal9000 07-06-05 02:22 AM

Don't quite know why but Fight Club every 4th of July. Maybe because that was the first day back in 1999 that I had the time to watch it with all the extras. Man that movie still kicks ass.

joliom 07-06-05 04:49 AM

I always watch Christmas movies around Christmas, and horror movies on Halloween, but none in particular, just whatever strikes my fancy. Usually National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, and Scrooged get at least one play, but it's not set in stone, it just sort of works out that way. Also, I typically give Planes, Trains & Automobiles a whirl on Thanksgiving, but mostly only because I don't have any other Thanksgiving-themed favorites. I try to make a point to watch a war movie that I've never seen on Memorial Day too.

Egon's Ghost 07-06-05 06:26 AM

Die Hard and Lethal Weapon--Christmas, of course.

danegger 07-06-05 07:39 AM

I always make it a point to pop in A Christmas Story during the X-Mas Holiday Season. I was raised up on that movie and it is sort of tradition around my house.

During Halloween, I usually watch the first Nightmare on Elm Street, the first Friday the 13th, and the first Halloween.

Other than those, anything else I might watch during the appropriate season is just on a whim.

I sort of collect Christmas movies and cartoons. I have maybe 40 or so DVDs in that binder, pull it out after every Thanksgiving, make it a goal to watch them all, and end up watching maybe 10 or so (usually the classic cartoons like Rudolph and Grinch, and my fav movies like Scrooged and A Christmas Story).

rexinnih 07-06-05 09:07 AM

ID4 on Independence Day and Christmas Story on Christmas day.

wordtoyamotha 07-06-05 09:15 AM

Skoobooz 07-06-05 09:41 AM

No, though I did think about watching 1776 this Fourth of July, if that counts.

freudguy 07-06-05 09:53 AM

I did this for several years (way before DVD's) but I found myself tiring of watching the same old movies each year so I try to mix it up now-a-days. There are the old stand-bys like A Christmas Story, Halloween, Sleepy Hollow, Christmas Vacation that are talked about ad-nauseum. However, I try to set up a Halloween film festival at my house that lasts all month long. This year (as well as last), I am starting in September because there is so much stuff I like to watch around Halloween. My wife and son have gotten used to this.

Crow331 07-06-05 10:02 AM

I watch a Christmas Story on Christmas eve or Christmas Day every year. During October every year, the El Capitan Theatre here in L.A. plays Nightmare Before Christmas on the big screen so I catch it in the theater.

The only other movie I make a point of seeing is THE CROW ... I watch it on March 31 every year, the day Brandon Lee died.

Red Dog 07-06-05 10:03 AM

White Christmas around Christmas time.

Hoosiers during Final Four weekend.

A few of the following around the start of baseball season: Major League, Bull Durham, The Natural, and Field of Dreams.

Any Given Sunday and Varsity Blues Labor Day weekend.

Lastdaysofrain 07-06-05 10:22 AM

Christmas - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Gremlins
Scrooged
A Christmas Story

Thanksgiving - Planes, Trains and Automobiles

June 21st (First day of Summer) - One Crazy Summer (every single year since 1988 I've done this)

Superbowl Sunday I've watched "Pump Up the Volume" instead of the Superbowl every year since 1992

March 24th - I watch the Breakfast Club EVERY YEAR on this day, been doing it for at least 15 years.

Muad'Dib 07-06-05 11:50 AM

Halloween I usually watch a Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm St. or Halloween movie. On a Friday the 13th I always watch a Friday the 13th flick. Usually Friday the 13th Part 7. And on Christmas I watch Scrooged, National Lampoon's Christmas Vaction, and A Christmas Story.

lordhidetora 07-06-05 02:24 PM

Every time my friends and I return home from college in between semesters we always have a bad movie film festival, and Hackers is always the headlining title.

WarriorPrincess 07-06-05 02:41 PM

Definitely. At Christmas I watch A Christmas Story, all the rankin/bass shows, frosty, grinch (animated, hated the live action), While You Were Sleeping, You've Got Mail, and of course a charlie brown christmas. At Thanksgiving I watch the thanksgiving peanuts, same with easter (easter beagle). At halloween I watch great pumpkin and nightmare before xmas (it's a halloween flick for me, not christmas). In the xmas season while wrapping gifts I often throw on several james bond films (tbs got me started with this several years ago with their 13 days of 007 marathons). If I have time I watch independence day on the 4th and april fools day on april 1, but my boyfriend hates ID, so for the second year in a row I missed it.

MisterHowie 07-06-05 02:54 PM

Thanks for all those replies! I never saw Planes, Trains and Automobiles and I'll definitely have to check that one out now. A couple of folks said that was the only one themed around this holiday but isn't there also a relatively recent (i.e. last two or three years) Katie Holmes and Patricia Clarkson drama about Thanksgiving too now? Pieces of April or something like that?

island007 07-06-05 02:56 PM

I try to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" every Christmas.

Brian Shannon 07-06-05 03:00 PM

The only ones that I do are Independence Day on July 4th and A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott) on Christmas Eve.

asianxcore 07-06-05 03:01 PM

the only holiday where I make a point to watch certain movies is on Halloween. always try to make time to bust out a crapton of horror movies and watch them.

Mr. Cinema 07-06-05 03:06 PM

The whole month of October has to include Halloween, Freddy vs Jason, TCM, The Thing, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Exorcist, and a few other gems.

Dansize 07-06-05 04:01 PM

No one has mentioned it so I will:

Thanksgiving = Home for the Holidays

"How absurd! Let's eat dead bird."

cajun_junky 07-06-05 04:34 PM

I watch alot of horror flicks on Halloween (especially Halloween series) and Christmas movies obviously during christmas. Those are the only holidays I am consistent with.

critterdvd 07-06-05 04:44 PM

Ever since I was like a todler and I can remember watching "Halloween" on Halloween, and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" of Xmas Eve, but even to this day, eventhough we own the DVDs, we still watch are old worn-out Vhs's.

L Chabert Lover 07-06-05 07:23 PM

"Black Christmas" at Christmas

JesseCuster8 07-06-05 07:36 PM

I try to switch it up each year and still keep it with the holiday. This last 4th of July weekend I watched "Cape Fear". I usually try to watch Psycho on my birthday, though, since it takes place on it. It also makes the perfect Mother's Day movie.

There are a bunch of Thanksgiving movies besides Planes, Trains & Automobiles - Pieces of April, Home for the Holidays, Dutch, The House of Yes, The Myth of Fingerprints, All You Need, Hannah and Her Sisters, What's Cooking?, The Thanksgiving Promise, Home Sweet Home, Thanksgiving Day, etc. I just don't like any of them except Planes, Trains & Automobiles (and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving).
