I've been schooled. To further elaborate, the strips are scanned and images are aligned frame by frame. To eliminate registration errors, some images require a simple reposition, while others need an electronic stretch or warp of one color record to fit the established geometry of the others.

One of the most beloved films of all time, The Wizard of Oz will see yet another release onto DVD on October 25th. The 1939 film, starring Judy Garland, will be available from Warner Home Video in separate two- and three-disc editions boasting a brand new digital transfer of the original negative (using Warner's "Ultra-Resolution" technology), as well as a newly remastered soundtrack.
Bonus materials will include a new commentary with historian John Fricke, outtakes and deleted scenes, four documentaries - including one on the restoration process, composer Harold Arlen's home movies made on the "Oz" set, an "Oz Jukebox" of recording session materials, radio shows, promo spots, trivia games, sing-alongs and more.
The three-disc edition will include four hours of additional features including a new documentary on "Oz" author L. Frank Baum, five early feature film versions of "Oz," reproductions of the invitation and program for the film's premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Retail will be $26.99 for the two-disc edition and $39.92 for the three-disc deluxe edition. Keep an eye on this space for the complete specs once the official press release is made available.
I hope new Commentary means the old Laserdisc commentary

Well, the four hours of Baum is in the 3-disc set, which you don't have to get. I'll probably get the 2-disc myself.

I'll pass on this, keep my current DVD, and put the money saved towards upgrading my barebones Titanic to the new 4-Disc version.

Baum led a very interesting life and wrote a whole series of OZ books that most people aren't aware of. I look forward to the 3-disc set.
I wonder if the documentaries on the 2-disc are repeats of the earlier release?

I'll be getting the 3-disc to replace my VHS copy. This is one that I just knew to avoid on DVD. Glad my patience has finally paid off.

This is definite buy for me, but I'm not sure what to do with the big special edition box I got a few years ago with the script and lobby cards. If all the special features are duplicated, I guess I can just sell the DVD and keep the other stuff.
Regardless, killer features, esp the silent versions.

Well, WB has been wowing us with their spectacular 2-disc editions that rank with best of the best - looks like they're upping the ante with what would seem to be a totally over-the-top 3-disc set. Why do I think that this will be one of the top 5 releases of the year .....
