Huh? Since when the US R1 dvds are cheaper than the Japanese R2 dvds?

What eau quoted says the US sets are pretty expensive compared to what you can get the Japanese sets for... but I'm thinking the author meant just the opposite.

And you generally only get two episodes per disc. Screw that!

I must be tired when I typed that response. Anyway. I meant R1 DVDs are generally cheaper than R2 DVDs ($30 vs $50+). Plus R2 DVDs usually include only 2-3 episodes while R1 include 3-4 episodes.

Oh. I mean the oppposite. I see Japanese complete sets(all 26 eps) for less than 30$. I've seen SAC+2nd gig for less than 40$. A complete American set would run me at least 100$. But I like the English dub so much, I get screwed.

I highly doubt they're legit copies. Most individual Japanese DVDs are at least $40. Here's one volume of the second series here for $60 for two episodes: http://us.yesasia.com/assocred.asp?C...ection-videos/

Japanese DVDs are often the most expensive dvds to purchase for an American consumer (generalizing here, of course). There is no way that the offical Japanese release of all of 2ng Gig would cost ~40 bucks. No Way Whatsoever. You show me where it costs that little, and I show you somebody selling bootlegs.

I stand corrected. I assumed the versions I saw were Japanese, since they had the Japanese dub. But the cases were nothing like the yes asia images. Granted they were on e(piracy)bay, but all the versions had the same cover and the were from respected sellers. I know you can't necessarily ascertain if they're bootlegs form a pic, but if someone could tell me what version, if any, the many version on ebay are, I'd appreciate it.

Here's a tip: If a DVD on eBay says it's from Asia, has English subtitles, is region-free, and is substantially cheaper than the official R1 release of the same title, there's about a 99.99% likelihood that it's a bootleg.

Why would you even be looking to buy the Japanese versions if you love the English dub so much, anyway? The R2 versions won't have it. Just wait for the official R1 releases of 2nd Gig (vol. 1 comes out this month)--they'll be cheaper than importing, you'll get your English dub, and you'll be supporting offical American anime distributors.

I remember the first several releases of SAC had a lot of problems with the mastering and such, has all this been corrected? I'm kinda wanting to wait for a boxset release, maybe even in thinpacks.

I like the Japanese dub as well. I was looking for a deal on those, originally.

The SAC dvds I have are fine. I think everything on shelves by now should be good. There's also a boxset of the first season available, in a metal tin, but they're not slim packs.

The tin only contains Vol. 7 and a T-shirt. You're meant to put the other volumes that you bought separately in there.

If you want to see what the official R2 DVDs are like, go to cdjapan.co.jp for a look.

You can also get the whole set with a tin.

One thing about GITS: SAC is that it's apparently more of an "alternate timeline" with the same characters, instead of a prequel series, to the two movies.

I don't why it wasn't just considered a prequel because there is really nothing in the series that makes it incompatible with taking place before the events in the two movies.

Well, in the first movie, Togusa had *just* been tranferred to Section 9, on the Major's recommendation. He and she have a discussion in the van about why she wanted him on the team. That would make SAC and the subsequent 2nd Gig pretty much impossible to act as prequels to the first film.

Sorry to revive the thread, but I had a few quick questions. First off, do any of the regular non deluxe SAC releases come with any kind of inserts? Secondly, what were the mastering problems with the early releases as Milo mentioned? On a side note, I was able to pick up all the releases except volumes 4 and 6 used at Hollywood Video. Discs were pristine, but no inserts. So far, it's been a great investment, especially for $5 a pop after the B1G1 Free coupon. Definitely check out your local HV.
