Finally came across a copy on sale at FYE for $16.99. Fortunately for me, the guy behind the counter accepted the $3 off coupon (found at fye.com), too!

Found out that our Barnes and Noble B&M store also has it (on sale for 15% off of $24.99 price).

So why don't any store have this? Went in to Tower Records on Wabash who has 8 on order and the Border's in my town where I work has 5 on order, but no one has this.

I went to Blockbuster and they don't carry it for rent or sale. I checked Family Video in town and they had two copies for rent, but both were out. Then I checked Hollywood Video again and they still didn't have it. I can't buy it anywhere, so I'm probably just gonna order it online.

I think because since oldboy is not your standard asian "hero", "kung fu hustle" type film, stores did not want to order alot of it since "they" (the stores) might not think it would sell..

I don't buy that theory. When I went out shopping for Oldboy yesterday, I ended up striking out, but coming home with a copy of "A Tale of Two Sisters" and "Audition" from WalMart and Best Buy, respectively. I'm not quite sure what "not your standard Asian type film" means...but I'm sure those two would apply just as much as, if not moreso than, Oldboy. There has to be another reason for these discs not showing up in any major B&M's.

I'm tempted to pay a larger B&M price than I should (likely at the only store in my area that seems to be carrying it, Barnes & Noble), simply because it's been delayed with no explanation. I'd hate to think that I missed out on the next Ed Wood type release (err...non-release) simply because I wanted to wait a few weeks so I could save $5.

This does not seem to be a case of stores not carrying the item because of what kind of film it is. Maybe I didn't make this clear in my last post, but all the stores I've checked do have multiple copies on order and all of them still list this last tuesday as a release date. If anything, this appears to be some sort of production delay, release date change, or as NatrlBornThrllr mentioned, a situation like the Ed Wood DVD.

I've just bit the bullet and bought it at a Barnes and Nobles in my area. I feel dirty paying extra and also working for Border's, but am really looking forward to watching this tonight. Forget going out to celebrate the end of my first week of law school. I'm watching my DVDs!

Just watched it last night. What a great film. Great DVD to boot. Now I can't wait for Sympathy for Mr./Mrs. Vengance to come out in my area.

Anyone in Toronto, Canada been able to find this in any B&M stores? I thought it was delayed until Sept 20, but I couldn't find it anywhere yesterday. Neither Futureshop.ca nor Bestbuy.ca have it listed, and HMV.ca has it listed as coming out on October 11 now ... anyone have any idea what is going on with this title up here?

I bought my copy through Amazon.ca. I had no luck finding this movie in any B&M stores.

I finally ended up picking this up. $15.99 Cdn plus tax. I saw some copies of these out in October, but $25.99 was a too steep for my liking. But now Futureshop's price has gone up to $29.99. Luckily, their price sticker on this in store still says $25.99. So because of the scanning code of practice -> $15.99

[RANT]I hate having to argue with the sales staff every time about their scanning code of practice. They always just say they'll give it to me for the stickered price. Customer service girl was plain bitchy about it when I was explaining it to her while pointing to the printout of the scanning code they had stuck to the customer service desk. "Just let me read it, okay?" she says. Still she insists she'll just sell it to me for $25.99. Then she has to go talk to a couple of other employees, and a manager I think. Comes back a few minutes later and tells another employee, "Ring this up for $15.99." Owned.[/RANT]

In my experience with stores like Best Buy, which is probably the same at FutureShop, this is normally due to the managers. They tell the employees either lies about the policies or tell them to give the customer the raw end of the deal and see if they buy it.

I agree. I also think that at least half the time it is because of the employee's own ignorance of the store policies. I've carefully studied some of their looks of bewilderment as I mention and/or point out their policies. Trust me, you can't fake that.

And yeah, Best Buy owns FutureShop now, so they're about on par with each other in terms of the level of frustration they impart on the consumer.

Ok, done ranting.

Best Buy management: We purposely train our CSRs wrong as a joke.

Davis DVD is indicating that Tartan will be releasing a 3 Disc Tin Set of Oldboy on 11/14/06. The website has a small image of the artwork of the tin.

It includes an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Korean & English Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS 5.1 Surround tracks, English subtitles and three commentary tracks (director, director & cinematographer, director & cast). Bonus materials on Disc 2 include ten deleted scenes with optional commentary, "Making The Film", "Production Design", "The Music Score", "CGI', "Flashback", and "Le Grand Prix at Cannes" featurettes, cast & crew interviews. Disc 3 includes "The Autobiography of Oldboy" video diary chronicling each day of the film's production. Rounding out the set are a 35mm film frame in a collector's card, the original 212-page Japanese Manga graphic novel and a metal tin case. Retail is just $39.99.
