Shipping is only around $2.50 but they charged me sales tax, which sucks!!

Cameron 08-25-05 11:19 PM

still waiting for screenshots on this one....

Bill Needle 09-15-05 11:18 AM

So has anyone heard anything further about the anamorphic widescreen vs full frame nature of this release? Any early reviews out there?

Michael Corvin 09-15-05 12:33 PM

I was wondering as well.

Cameron 09-17-05 01:59 AM

I was hoping to get my hands on this set last night from my usual early source, but they underordered and wer eout of it. I hope to have it Monday.

There are still no reviews or info anywhere that I have seen. Anyone seen anything? I'm wondering if anamorphic widescreen is worth double dipping for.

2 tidbits:

1. It's $60 on sale at Circuit City this week.

2. It comes with a free ticket to that new IMAX movie, Magnificent Desolation 3-D.

bunkaroo 09-18-05 09:51 PM

Circuit City lists it at $64.99 in their ad, but still a good deal.

Cameron 09-20-05 12:16 AM

i know somebody has this by now....screenshots my friends...screenshots

bboisvert 09-20-05 07:55 AM

 I can't believe we made it to release day without a single review...

So, now that it's out... what's the verdict?

Thanks for the great review! I sold off the original release a year or so as I was hoping for a re-release. While I loved the program, I disliked the boxset. I also know it was prone to rot.

I definitely would like to see more comparisons, but I will very likely pick this up today. Not happy about the cropping, but the framing in the 16:9 doesn't look too cramped to me.

Goldblum 09-20-05 09:10 AM

Thanks, das. Well, there you go, people. It has been cropped after all.

It's a mixed bag, but aside from a few obvious instances, I probably only noticed it because I was looking for it.

Thanks das - I'll be holding on to my old copy.

so it's an actual ticket, the wording on the plastic sticker "(see insides for details)" always implies to me, that there's more involved than just getting handed a ticket.

I've decided to be sneaky on this purchase, and buy it at Best Buy, return later in the day with the Circuit City ad and get some additional money knocked off the BB sale price.

Well since:

Now to the odd part. The primary force behind this updated release is apparently the brand new anamorphic widescreen transfer. Widescreen is great and anamorphic is essential ... when it's the correct ratio. I've read that during the filming of the miniseries, it was understood that it would one day be presented in widescreen, so shots were framed with both aspect ratios in mind, and therefore the open matte version that aired on HBO and was subsequently released to DVD in 1998 should not be superior to the widescreen version in this "Signature Edition". Oh, how I want to believe that. Clearly, there is cropping in both versions, but I'll let you decide:
They both looked cropped in one way or another. So it looks like it is a matter of personal preference if you ask me.

Where did you read that das?

My hopes are that the new anamorphic transfer *looks better* on my HDTV. I played the old version over the last few weeks, and it seemed to suffer from quite a few visual artifacts. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't be bothering with a new release, but I really enjoy the substance of this series, having lived through the time. So if the new transfer is better, I'll forgive any framing issues. It appears that this release is one of those that can go either way, depending on preference.

1.33:1 is the OAR. I don't think, judging by most of the shots on my original set, that this was composed with 1.78:1 in mind. HBO should be ashamed to put out this great series in altered aspect-ratio.

Well, then, you should hold on to that 1.33:1 set, but I'm not entirely sure that HBO should be ashamed to be releasing a 1.78:1 set. This is no different than the widescreen/full screen versions of most everything being released today.

I don't recall off-hand, but the point of that paragraph is not to imply that the statement is valid. I'm just noting what I've heard (read). That's why I prefaced it with "I've read ..." What you should take from the paragraph is, "Oh, how I want to believe that. Clearly, there is cropping in both versions." Personally, I find it really hard to believe shots were composed with anything other than 1.33:1 in mind.

Exactly. I don't think HBO started using 1.78:1 presentations for its TV shows until maybe The Sopranos, which was, if I'm not mistaken, 2 years after the mini-series in question.
