Nice to see Brides of Dracula, Curse of the Werewolf and Evil of Frankenstein.

Now we just need to get Twins of Evil!! What studio has the rights to that one, anyway?

I think MGM (now Sony) does. I used to have the VHS prerecord, but I forget who put that out (not MGM, some small company). That tape goes for around 40 bucks in used condition nowadays (of course, that will change if a dvd release happens).

It was released on VHS via Vidamerica Video.

If you want a preview, Universal has been airing Curse of the Werewolf and The Evil of Frankenstein in high-definition on Universal HD. (Brides of Dracula was on the schedule for this month but was yanked for some unknown reason.)

I'm all in.

sold...great stuff

gorgo99 06-09-05 03:38 PM

That's a great set at a fantastic price... I'd easily have paid that much for 2 of them individually... if $29.95 is MSRP you can bet it will be $25 or less online.

Eight movies on two discs? Yikes! What's the running time on these?

Check out the thread on the other release that Universal is doing -- The Bela Lugosi Collection. FIVE movies on ONE disc! Granted they're all probably pretty damn close to 60 minutes each, but still...

Preterite 06-09-05 04:30 PM

These sets will probably be in the same format as Universal's Abbot & Costello, Hope & Crosby, and Ma & Pa Kettle sets - dual-layer, double-sided discs with a film on each layer. Two films per side, four films per disc makes an eight-film, two-disc set. As the Hammers generally run around 90 minutes, compression shouldn't be too much a factor.

TWINS OF EVIL, VAMPIRE CIRCUS, and COUNTESS DRACULA are owned by the british company Rank Film Organisation. The video rights are with Studio/Canal-Carlton. MGM made a deal in order to release Countess Dracula on dvd as a Midnight Movie. If you look on the back cover you will see the Carlton logo by the credits. There is a box set off all three that was released in R2 by Studio/Canal, all 16x9 widescreen.

Holy Crap! About freaking time! Excellent news. Me likie my Hammer Horror.

GOS 06-10-05 08:49 AM

-ohbfrank- I will not be purchasing this set. I only want three of the titles: "Brides of Dracula", "Kiss of the Vampire" & "Nightmare". I will wait until they are (hopefully) released individually.

Zodiac_Speaking 06-10-05 04:09 PM

I've been waiting to put Curse of the Werewolf into my dvd collection, to accompany my one sheet.

Come one. At maximum pricing that works out to about $3.75 a movie. It took over 8 years to get the movies out on disc. How long are you willing to wait until single releases hit the shelves. If you just want to watch the three movies and ignore the rest in the set, you're still only paying 10 bucks a movie.....which is probably about what you would pay if they were separate.

Who has the rights to "The Gorgon?" I currently have a crappy EP VHS from Goodtimes of this title, but would really like to get a good widescreen, since for some reason it is one of my favorite Hammers.

I think Sony/Columbia has the rights to "Gorgon", along with 2 of my other favorites, "Scream of Fear" and "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb". With the acquisition of MGM, that probably gives them "Quatermass Xperiment" and "Vampire Circus" as well.

Doc Moonlight 06-10-05 08:41 PM

While I'm excited about all of these titles coming to DVD, I'm especially excited about NIGHT CREATURES as I have read much about it but never seen it.

Sorry for the confusion, I should have said that I believe MGM currently holds the US distribution rights. Of course, you are correct about Rank and Studio/Canal-Carlton. Thanks for the clarification.

Jah-Wren Ryel 06-12-05 10:59 AM

FWIW, I think some or all of these titles are runing in high-def on UniversalHD.
Yeah, that's right High-Def Hammer Horror.
