Collecting AFI top 100 films
I have most of them, but would really like to know if they will rerelease:
Wuthering Heights To Kill a Mockingbird Double Indemnity. Those 3 are out of print now, but thought they would be rereleased or something. Anyone heard anything? Thanks, Joshua |
To Kil a Mockingbird would be rereleased this fall. I have the currently OOP edition, which is really good and has a great documentary on it. I've also been collecting AFI's top 100 movies and I've replaced some undeserving movies on the list (Forrest Gump, Dances With Wolves, Doctor Zhivago, Giant, Guess Who's coming To Dinner) with better ones (Sunrise, Trouble in Paradise, His Girl Friday, The Lady Eve, The General, The Big Sleep etc.)with other ones. I made my own edited version of the AFI list that excludes the undeserving titles and I've been collecting only those that are on my edited list.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is on the list, and thanks to Sony's inexplicable new policy of dropping the OAR widescreen versions on a number of its double sided disks, is now available only as a P&S full screen version. The previous version had a correct anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer on one side and a 4:3 P&S (not open matte) version on the other. So it is currently OOP in its OAR.
I like this movie a lot, I've got the version with the WS AR, but I too think it's overreaching a little to have it in the top 100. To each his own of course. |
Anyone thinking of collecting the AFI list might want to pick up a copy of Jonathan Rosenbaum's MOVIE WARS. He has an essay on what a joke they were and offers an even better, top 100 list. Those titles are probably more worthy of collecting than the generic AFI list.
|
I have 77 of the 100. Most of them I got because I wanted them anyway. Others I bought as a recommendation. Lists are fine as long as their are plenty of them.
|
Just looked up the list and I have 50 of the 100. I may get around to finishing off the list after I complete some of the other sub-collections I'm working on.

Not that anybody asked, but I've been trying to collect the movies on this list...
They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? "This list of the 1,000 Greatest Films of all-time has been compiled by using individual critics' and filmmakers' top-tens from film polls conducted by Sight & Sound (1992 & 2002), John Kobal (1988), Positif (1991), Time Out (1995), Village Voice (1999), Facets (2003) and selected top tens listed by Senses of Cinema, Combustible Celluloid, Your Movie Database's (YMDB) Critics Corner and various other sources. Commencing with John Kobal's 1988 poll, a total of 1,000 top-tens have so far been used to calculate (via some rather tricky formulas) the 1,000 Greatest Films. " |

I collect these and am up to 65. I don't go out of my way to get them, but rather put them on 'gift lists' and such, or grab them when they are on sale.
Is The African Queen on DVD? I believe that one is either OOP or never been in print. It's the highest one on the list that I don't have. I'd like to also collect Oscar winners for the 39 years I've been alive, but there's some real stinkers on that list. I've enjoyed the few AFI films I've blind bought thus far. |

Let's see how many I have out of 1000..209. I own 209 of the 1000. Although the inclusion of Donnie Darko before any Paul Thomas Anderson film has made that list null and void. |
Yes..I own 2 of the top 100, and I haven't even watched them....

Maybe it's because I'm older and grew up when classic movies were shown on TV all the time, but having seen most (maybe all) of the AFI listed films, I would never think of buying all of them on DVD. I guess for someone wanting to get a quick and easy overview of classic Hollywood cinema it might not be so bad, but I would recommend renting before buying in many, many cases.
|
I started collecting the AFI 100 when most of them were available at CH. I have 95 (My AFI Top 100 collection). The ones I'm missing (not surprisingly) are African Queen, Double Indemnity, Wuthering Heights, King Kong, and the Jazz Singer.
Sure, it's not really the best 100 American Movies--not even close to my list since my favorites are darker movies, like Blue Velvet, Brazil, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, etc., but so what, I've enjoyed collecting them (and last I checked, the reason to collect DVDs is because you have fun doing it), and I've seen some movies I wouldn't have otherwise that I enjoyed. |

Not all of us collect JUST to watch them. Like the person who collects spoons...they don't eat off of them. Or shot glases from every state...ya don't drink from them. Watching them is a nice bonus tho! :) |

 I own a whopping 6/100 Movies on DVD on AFI's 100 films. Some of those movies I wouldn't own on DVD if i was dead because me personally I didn't like them & some I now realize i should buy on DVD & will now end up looking for them next tuesday on my DVD weekly shopping day, thanks to this thread.
Anyways here's the wons I own... Star wars Psycho E.T. M*A*S*H -*note*: I bought this as a blind buy and althrough I might get some heat for this, I absolutely hated the movie and it has none of the things that made the TV show genius & one of the greatest shows ever. Forrest Gump Platoon |

I own 9:
The Godfather The Godfather Part II Chinatown One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Taxi Driver Network Fargo Goodfellas Pulp Fiction |
I just finished getting the top 20. I don't see a need to get all 100.
|
I have 18 of them. There are some I'd like, but waiting on SE's.
1. CITIZEN KANE (1941) 3. THE GODFATHER (1972) 6. THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) 8. ON THE WATERFRONT (1954) 15. STAR WARS (1977) 24. RAGING BULL (1980) 25. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (1982) 26. DR. I own 20 of them and have counted an additional 28 that I used to own at one time (and hopefully will someday again). Still waiting for Paramount to get off their butts and release The African Queen. Absolutely ridiculous! They'd better do it right when they finally do it. I am rarely impressed by a Paramount release.
|
25 and I don't see that changing.
|
Luckily I own them all. I ordered The African Queen and The Jazz Singer as imports.
|
I own 46 and have sold off 4 over time ('Fantasia' because it was selling high and I realized I didn't care that much, 'Silence of the Lambs' (Criterion) & 'To Kill A Mockingbird' & 'Patton' I sold while they were OOP but solid upgrades had been announced, just haven't gotten around to upgrading them). And five more which were in my collection when it was stolen which I never got around to replacing.
|
I own at least one version of 96 of the titles on the list. I do not own Wuthering Heights, The African Queen, The Jazz Singer, or An American in Paris.
Based on the previews for the upcoming AFI 100 special, I think it is safe to assume that The Shawshank Redemption is now in the AFI top 100. I've seen 9+ out of 10. I own (on DVD) 4.
|
Not basing my collection from the AFI list, I have 48 of them.
|
This is a list I've long wanted to complete, and I now have around 90 out of the 100 movies. My problem is that there are two movies that I absolutely cannot imagine owning (and really, in both cases, I don't even respect anyone else's collection that does have them), and one of them (Star Wars) is on the AFI list (even worse, the far worse other, The Matrix, is nominated for the new list).
I'm sure someday soon I'll have 99 of the movies from the list. Not sure I'll ever give up my pride and lower the integrity of my collection in order to complete the list, though. |
I own 67 of the current 100. It's something that I pay attention to when I'm buying dvds.
|
If Crash makes a list of the 100 Best Movies of All Time, AFI should probably just shut its doors. Usual Suspects deserves a spot though.
Here's what I own from the list: 1. CITIZEN KANE (1941) 2. CASABLANCA (1942) 3. THE GODFATHER (1972) 4. GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) 6. THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) 7. THE GRADUATE (1967) 9. SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993) 10. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952) 12. SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) 14. SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959) 15. STAR WARS (1977) 16. ALL ABOUT EVE (1950) 18. PSYCHO (1960) 19. CHINATOWN (1974) 20. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) 22. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) 23. THE MALTESE FALCON (1941) 24. RAGING BULL (1980) 25. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (1982) 26. DR. STRANGELOVE (1964) 28.
