Cool thread. Does anyone know what the most valuable or hard to find titles are? It'd be easier to know which titles are considered most rare if we had a list of current resale value or difficultness to find. Whats the most anyone has ever seen a dvd go for on ebay??

As for me, im not sure which is most rare, but i do have some of the early criterion: killers, hardboiled.

It is available from www.davidlynch.com. It runs around $60 (after S&H which is pricey, but you get VERY cool packaging), but is not rare.

IMO, well worth the price for Lynch fans & the transfer is stunning. Not rare, however.

I don't think this is actually "rare" at all, given that they also just started selling them at regular stores and internet sites (Amazon, etc.). It's just pricey. And as for telling real from fake, well, the real ones come in a relatively giant box.

Just added This Is Spinal Tap: CC and the recalled Little Shop of Horrors to my collection, in regards to rare discs.

keepsakedness? You mean like to sell at a profit in the future? If so, my guess would be a strong no. DL.com will sell them forever, it was not a limited one-time printing.

If you don't like Lynch, I would not consider Eraserhead. At the very least, rent it from a local indie-type video store. Or Netflix it, they carry it. You'll pay at least $40 and the risk of you not liking it (assuming you already do not enjoy Lynch) is substantial. That said, I love Eraserhead. I could watch it 24-hours a day.

As far as it being available outside of DL.com, I know that is in the works. But at the moment, DL.com is the only source.

In order of popularity and highest sales, it's;

1) Salo White Ring CC
2) The Killer CC
3) Wrong Men & Notorious Women Collection
4) This Island Earth
5) MST3K: The Movie

The original CC pressing of Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai" will pop up in the $100+ range sometimes as well. From there, it's pretty sporatic, i.e. "This Is Spinal Tap" floats anywhere between $60-$100.

no, not for future sale, just to have as a cool dvd keepsake..you know a movie that isn't anywhere else, can't be rented locally...a conversation piece moreso. i just wish i could preview it or rent before buying, but no indies or netflix

Hard to know how many are out there, but it's not even listed at Amazon and rarely comes up for auction at EBay. I bought it at my local Borders for less than retail.

Second would be the VCI release of Monte Hellman's The Shooting. I searched for over a year for this OOP disc; finally found it online ... in Denmark. Although many EBayers have advertised this DVD, nearly all are selling an inferior PD release from Madacy or Passion Productions.

Third, the Limited Edition Tin of Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop from Anchor Bay (with collector's key chain!! ).

Last, the limited edition Chinese boxset from Sino Movie, Hou Hsiao-hsien Classics: From 1983 to 1986.

I've watched all of these (and even loaned a few to friends), and couldn't really care less about what they're worth (they're mixed in with the rest of my DVDs, and I don't wear white gloves when I handle them). I buy DVDs for the films themselves, not as an investment (but it's cool for people who are into that).
I have Shoeshine too, and this is the first I'm hearing about it being so rare. I can't find it on any website that deals in used DVDs, and it doesn't come up in an Ebay search.

I hate to sound totally opportunistic, but what kind of prices does it bring?

1. the 2004 Finnish 3-disc Director's Cut version of BLADE RUNNER, remastered anamorphic widescreen, English DTS 6.1 ES, commentary with Scott, Ford, Young, and Hauer... which also includes 3 hours of features/documentaries (in English) on disk 2, andthe Vangelis soundtrack is on disk 3.

I was lucky enough to order it online before they pulled it off the shelves, since it's taking forever for the Region 1 NTSC special edition.

Wouldn't the 'Little Shop of Horrors' special edition be at #4 on that list? I've never seen MST3k go for $100 (though, admittedly, I stopped paying much attention to it after I bought it for $40)...

Anyway, I don't have anything too weird that's rare, just the standards; 'Little Shop', 'MST3k', 'Spinal Tap', and the Hitchcock box. And the Disney Treasures discs, but those don't seem to sell as high anymore; I have all the Mickeys plus Goofy, Silly Symphonies, Donald, and War Shorts...

I just sold off a bunch of my second-tier rare stuff on eBay, because of reissues ... got $30-$40 each for 'Robocop' (Criterion), 'Muppet Movie', 'Return of the Pink Panther', 'Blues Brothers', 'Mallrats', and 'To Kill A Mockingbird'

I have seen Farewell, my Lovely go for over 150 on ebay. It almost never shows up though.
