Are people actually buying PSP movies?
Not sure where else to post this.
I saw some at Target for the first time today. They're a lot more $$ than the DVDs of the same movies and I'm just wondering if they'll last, because they were taking up precious DVD shelf space.

A friend of mine uses his alot, except not for gaming, but he seems to use a program to put movies on the sony memory stick to take with him, why anyone would buy another differnt media version of Spiderman 2 just to play on a PSP is beyond me. If you want to take your DVD's with you just buy a portable DVD player, I think they are cheaper than a PSP.

I wasn't originally going to buy movies for the PSP, but my wife snagged me a used one in a bundle with Pirates and OoatiM, and they don't look half bad and I'm thinking they'll be kinda nice to have. I'm certainly not going to go nuts, and I'm more interested in ripping my SW OT LD's to a memory card to play on instead, but I think the right material might be an interesting diversion.
And many places are discounting them well below $24.99.
Oh and the Pirates one has the Hitchhikers teaser on it, pretty neat.

I could kinda see renting PSP movies, but I couldn't buy one. They're more expensive than DVDs, they can only be played on the PSP, they don't have any special features to speak of, and 2.35:1 movies get cropped down to 1.78:1 to fit on the screen. I just can't get excited about that.

My friend got a PSP when they were released, and got the Spider Man 2 disc of course. He bought Are We There Yet? last week, because the Circuit City ad listed it for $17.99. He got it price matched at Best Buy where they were selling it for $24.99.
He had trouble getting it matched, but after the manager read the CC ad carefully, they did it.
He said he'll get other films if they are comparable to the price of regular DVD's...
I really don't know why he bought the PSP in the first place. He doesn't have a computer, so he can't transfer stuff to it, and he has a portable dvd player already (2 in fact, an 8 inch and a 10 inch)...
He just likes new technology I think.

According to this article, UMD sales are pretty good right now:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/product...d-movies_x.htm
Two UMD movies have now sold more than 100,000 copies each: Sony's House of Flying Daggers and Resident Evil 2, both released April 19. Sony's Feingold calls the sales tally "remarkable," noting that it took nine months for the first DVD title, Air Force One, to cross the 100,000-unit mark.
Five of the six major studios are on board. The latest to click in: Paramount and MGM. Only Warner Bros. continues to sit out.
More than 70 UMD titles are in stores or are scheduled to arrive in the coming months. "No other format has gotten this much software support since DVD was launched eight years ago," notes analyst Tom Adams of Adams Media Research.

I could accept the cropping by itself, and I realize that some of these discs do have a few special features, but when you factor it all in, it just doesn't seem worth it to me.

They sell very well at my store. We usually sell out the 1st day or 2 of shipments. Granted, we only get 2-3 per movie, but I thought they would collect dust.

I own a PSP and I can't see ever buying movies for it. Maybe if they were $5.00 or they will the dvd, for a few dollars more. They are selling incredibly well, and so did the GBA videos. People like portable movies I guess

I really just don't see how I could ever like them. I'm sure many love them for their PSP, but I think the screen size is just awful for a film to be played on.

They're taking up a lot of shelf space at my local Target and Hastings both, probably a lot to do with their $25 and $30-34 pricetags, respectively. I didn't even know what they were for a couple of weeks, until I started seeing commericals for movies coming out on DVD and PSP. They don't have much appeal imo, since they're more pricey and have nothing much to offer you special, especially if you have a portible DVD player.

I think most people will buy a bigger memorycard and just rip their dvd's and put that on their psp. A bit silly to buy your movies twice. Quality is much better than I expected though. And the 'why want a portable system' remark is kinda silly. It's a perfect toy for when you are on the road and have some time to kill. I usually copy some series on it and it's great. You can have your favorite games, music, photo's, series and movies all within reach.

I think people are buying them for the novelty factor. Before the PSP, there really wasn't a way to carry around a movie in your pocket. (Yes, there are portable DVD players, but those are still too big to fit in a pocket, and if you want to carry two or three movies it takes even more space. Although I guess women could carry them in a purse.) So, people who just got a PSP may pick up a movie or two just because it's a new thing to them. It's like when you get a surround system for the first time, you may just get some big action movies to hear the cool sound, but then the novelty wears off and you get more movies you actually like. We'll have to see how many movies people are willing to buy after they have had their PSP's for six months or so.
Another thing could be the price, which may be higher than the DVD, but compare it to how much the games cost. The movies make better impulse buys. After spending $250 on the thing, I can see where people who want something for the system would get a movie for $20 rather than a $40-$50 game. I wonder if the movies will sell as well when the games start coming down in price and you can get a game for the same price as a movie.
