Can you do a huge favor and take out the pics from you quote. They show up twice back to back.

Refering solely to the shot on the street outside "Spook Central," the new R1 looks much too bright. The white areas on the police car and ambulance are washed out, virtually eliminating detail. The old R1 may be darker, but it looks more natural. Granted this is only one scene, but I think this one scene looks better in the previous release.

Aren't the Ghostbusters films supposed to be darker, for atmosphere? They're comedies, but they're dark comedies.

I wonder how often we look at comparisons between old and new and think the new looks better just because it's different from what we're used to. I agree that many of the cases above do show a nicer transfer in the new R1. But if you didn't know which transfer was which, and all you were given were a bunch of screen shots, which one do you think would have the overall edge in the end?

Going down to Best Buy next Tuesday. Probably won't decide until I have the new release in my hands.

it appears when comparing the old region 1 vs new region 1, if you look closely, it may be the same transfer with just a contrast and color boost, the image is just a little more sharper. i won't know for sure until i purchase the new dvd if the new transfer is better that what i have now.

Also remember for the scene out side "Spook Central" and the scene in the court room (GB2) that there would be a lot of lightening, so the shots taken maybe during a flash.

Yeah, I prefer the old R1, judging from these captures.

I'll see how it looks on my set...

The old r1 is quite a bit softer if you look at the background detail. For example, in the 'Spook Central' comparison, look at thge army guy squat at the back right. In the new r1 release his face is quite detailed, compare that to the smudge that is his face in the old r1 capture.

the color looks much more accurate on the new transfer, and definitely more detail.

The old R1 seems very adequate, but is it anamorphic? I can't remember... I'm holding it in my hands and it does say widescreen but I'm too lazy to stick it in and find out!

I think the new GB2 looks like a definite improvement over the old R1, judging from these screenshots.

The trailers are reported to still be there but as an easter egg (source: DVD Town)

The first film seems to be full-frame while the sequel is 2.40:1

even though the box say full screen, Ghostbusters is widescreen, i would say buy it just for the animated cartoons, the real ghostbusters was my favorite show growing up, i hope they will release a season box of this great show

Went to Circuit City. They had about a dozen Full Frame ones and ZERO Widescreen for the first film.

edit: to the above response, it's a box misprint. Read through this thread again for details.

And GB1 is 2.35:1, correct? Some cropping makes sense since the old transfer is 2.40:1. The new transfer is 2.364:1, the old one 2.397:1.
