I don't know if it will help much, but it seems like Sony/Columbia-TriStar need to have a ton of e-mails & letters sent their way to let them know that a large segment of their consumer market really hates this decision.
At the VERY least they should change the catalog number so as to avoid confusion, but it would be preferable to have them continue to make the flippers with both versions. Sometimes getting flooded with mail/e-mail makes corporate suits wake up. Sometimes it doesn't - but it would seem to be worth the effort in this case. |

Well, the re-releases have all taken major price reductions, you expect to get something for nothing?
Skip |
Plenty of other studios have dropped their prices to the same level but have kept both transfers if they originally included both. The only other studio dropping content at price reductions is MGM dropping Special Edition material on some titles, and they're at least keeping the proper versions of the movies on the new discs.
The prices on Multiplicity and Stepmom don't seem to have dropped to the $5.50 level either, yet they've both lost the widescreen versions. Price drops are no excuse for drops in quality, and if they're going to do this they should at least still sell the 2-sided discs at the higher price. A few of these titles still have widescreen Superbit releases, but not all of them. |
In the batch of stuff I got in the last 20% off DDD sale, I ordered Geronimo...finally got around to popping it in today and it's the full screen reissue :( every retailer still lists it as a flipper....as does DVDProfiler....but this is Full Screen only. I suppose i'm screwed at this point, and it was only $5....but i'm pissed
|
They only released THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS in full-screen, when it can be widely seen on TCM in letterbox. What the F**K Gives? If I am selling widescreen tvs and only offering full-frame movies, I can see why we won't make budget this year.
SONY GET A CLUE (If I could translate this into Japanese, I would) |

Is there an update on new titles that's getting the widescreen dropped?
|
Bought "The Cable Guy" at best buy ..... it was FOOLscreen only
|
I bought Cable Guy when it was first released in widescreen/foolscreen
|
do the creators of the film have no say in this? i mean, i realize the studio makes the decisions, but i would assume that directors and such should be able to say they want their film released in the way it was intended. luckily for me, i already purchased the titles that i want on that list a long time ago so i don't have to worry about this problem.
|
Look Who's Talking has been reissued in Foolscreen only with a new cover and 2007 date on it; I managed to find the old disc at Wal-Mart for the same price so I grabbed it. I don't have access to retailer websites anymore so I don't know if they are still planning to keep doing this; it's got to have created a lot of bad PR for them though. I'm probably going to get a new TV in the next year, and I won't even consider a Sony because of this.
Some speculated this was done to push people towards Blu-Ray, but none of these titles have come out in that format yet. If I buy a Blu-Ray player it also will NOT be a Sony (actually hoping the dual-format players become more commonplace and affordable soon.) |
i have wondered for 2 years why i only found 'And Justice For All' in fullscreen...
i looked quite a bit actually... a damn shame... |
I spent $26 on Sweet and Lowdown and opened it, thinking the Full Screen had to be a misprint since the DVD I got from Netflix was a flipper, but no. I ended up having to spend another $20 to get the UK version so I could see it in the proper aspect ratio. $46 for one movie, thanks Sony.

Obviously Sony dropped one side of the discs to save some pennies during the production process, which pisses me off. The fact that they didn't give these discs new UPC's in unforgivable!! I'm actually more prone to believe that they dropped WS from so many releases was in response to pressure from Wall-Mart. It doesn't explain why some releases retained their WS version (like "Dick"). None of the choices seem to have been made based on artistic merit. Sometimes, on the dual format releases, each side had its own distinct features (like deleted scenes on one side and a making of on the other). Perhaps some of these extras had royalties associated with them, and that's how Sony made the choice. |
First, let me say that I hate Sony and have never bought a dvd or laserdisc that wasn't WS.
BUT I totally understand why they don't seem to care about how they produce their dvd's. 99.99% of people do not care about aspect ratios. It is only a fringe minority of people (like me) who even care about the aesthetics of film. My evidence of this fact is that I tried to sell my widescreen Sony dvd's (Sweet & Lowdown, The Deep, etc) on Amazon and Ebay for MSRP, and there was no interest. I could not give them away. Sony must have at least as good market research as me. |
Theres no mystery here- SONY is run by a bunch of clueless idiots, running around like chickens with their heads cut off, as they are bleeding cash badly (from what ive read)
And of course virtually PAYING people to use Blu Ray cant have helped. The discs cost far more to produce than what they are selling them for. Not so with HD. ---------- from Digital Bits: Finally, in the "You've Got to Be F-ing Kidding Me!" category, it seems that there's a THIRD high-def disc format on the way. According to this story at Yahoo, a company called New Medium Enterprises is soon to launch HD VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc) at Amazon and Radio Shack stores. HD VMD discs hold 30GB of data and feature a data rate of 40 mbps using MPEG-2 and VC-1 (AVC may be added later). The main selling point is that the cost to consumers is much lower than either Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Their player will sell for just $150. If I had to guess, I'd guess this will be a non factor. What studio is going to want to sell their movies on a THIRD HD format? It sure doesn't make decisions any easier for consumers. (Wanna bet?) I think Bill is whistleing past the graveyard. The studios might jump at the chance to make out like bandits-they can still sell a title for $19,95 SRP-or $14.95 and have below the line costs of say, $5.00 per disc from idea>prepwork>authouring>transport>point of sale=$$$$$ Or, to quote from LIFEFORCE: "Dear God! if this spreads-in a matter of days we'll all be doomed!"- Dr. Hans Fallada (speaking on behalf of SONY) |
The following are all the titles, mistakes notwithstanding, mentioned in this thread, the one linked to, the HTF thread and some other research (AllMovie, DVDCompare, etc.).
I'm sure there are others not mentioned also (would it be useful to anyone to post a list of CTHE titles that DVDPriceSearch lists as 16x9/4x3 in case it sparks any others?). :Titles that had their IAR removed: 3 Ninjas: High Noon On Mega Mountain 3 Ninjas Kick Back 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up (1995) ...And Justice for All (1979) About Last Night... I was hoping to buy Iron Eagle eventually. I guess I waited too long.
Is Joe Six Pack STILL demanding movies without the black bars? Silly me, I thought we were past that. |
Finally found Multiplicity, Hideaway & Mortal Thoughts in Widescreen
|
We got in Vampires at work, and found it was foolscreen only.

The following are the Sony/CTHE titles that dvdpricesearch lists as having both a OAR and MAR transfer. The only purpose it serves is to possibly spark additions to those that may have silently had their OAR/MAR transfers dropped for inclusion in the above list.
It is by no means complete, as I'm sure their info will omit some, nor 100% accurate as I imagine it lists some as having both when they really didn't.
