Was "The Hobbit" DVD altered from VHS version?
Since this isn't really dealing with the merits of the movie itself, just a review of the DVD version, I figured it belonged in this forum.
I was about to buy The Hobbit, but noticed some reviews on Amazon talking about changes made to the DVD version. I couldn't find any details on the changes though and nothing showed up in searching reviews here on DVDTalk.
Anyone know what the deal is?

From: Right now, my location is DVDTalk, but then again, you should already know that, shouldn't you?
A series of sound effects cues (most notably in the attack of the spiders sequence) is missing. No dialogue or music is affected though, and no scenes are missing.

I have refused to buy it until the sound effects are returned. it just seems too wrong to not have the "whoooop" when he puts on the ring. I guess i'll just have to put my VHS copy onto DVDr since they'll probably never get around to fixing the current dvd.

Giving this thread a massive bump as I'm a huge fan of this film (childhood fav) and I've come across an R2 Spanish DVD of it:

Anyone know if this version has all the original sound effects intact?

The one effect I know is "diluted" is when Smaug breathes fire after Bilbo runs out of his cave. I remember that even from the first time I saw the film on TV in 1977 the sound of the fireblast was pretty powerful.
