Is the "Ultimate Matrix" worth it just for the first movie?

I really want the new transfer, but have all the rest or don't care about all the rest. So is the new visual quality truly worth the still high set price?

Also, any further comments would be very helpful...

I was very impressed with the new transfer and slightly-improved audio, which on a film like The Matrix makes all the difference. If you're a fan of the first movie, this is probably the best it's going to be for a long time. Plus the extra supplements are really good as well.

Since I already own each each title, except for Revisited, they're smoking crack if they think I'll lay money down for Reloaded or Revolutions again. I'd re-buy the original with the greener tint and keep case (assuming it was $14.99 or less), but that's about the extent I'll put more money in the Matrix franchise.

edit:if I'm going to spend upwards of $50 on a box, that Steve McQueen collection looks kick-ass.

For as bad as they messed up the trilogy, I would not do it. One of the biggest collapses in movie/sports/insert any category here history. I am sure a HD-DVD (or whatever the new name will be) will have a Matrix version in its early lifetime.

$50-60 just for one movie? I think not... maybe for the original version of SW but not Matrix.

I had all the original releases except Revisited and The Animatrix, because I knew that it was going to be in the Ultimate Collection would contain it. And I still bought the collection because I absolutely hated the transfer on the original film's disc. I was also interested in seeing all the Revisited discs for each movie. I have still yet to view the one for Revolutions or the last three discs.

If you really want the new recolor-timed transfer of the first film and are even remotely interested in the Revisited titles and the other three discs, then getting the Ultimate set is a no-brainer. Being that the set has been out since December and still no word from WB that they're thinking of releasing the first movie separately, I doubt they'll do it anytime soon, if ever at all...at least until the next HD format.

The way I looked at it, the fluff stuff on the Reloaded and Revolutions discs were throw away extras. I ended up giving my copy of Matrix to a friend's son, and my Reloaded and Revolutions copies to my sister.

If you already have the other titles and aren't interested in any of the new features you'd probably end up feeling like you pissed away a great deal of cash for nothing.

In your particular case, it doesn't sound like it. However if you feel the bonus discs and extras have some value, then it makes things a little more worthwhile.

Only if you manage to sell off your other discs for a moderate sum.

Interesting how the Wachowski's can change The Matrix from it's original theatrical version without so much as a peep (and in fact, people are willing to buy the boxset for the individual movie) but when Lucas does it... well, we all know what happens!

No. It's too much to upgrade just for the first movie. Probably worthwhile to wait for the HD format, or separate first movie release on DVD instead.

First off, people did complain about the colour timing changes. But then everyone realized it was just a colour time change and the original version is still available for purchase. So the arguments ceased.

But I do agree that Lucas gets bashed far more than anyone deserves.

It's worth it for the new transfer alone! Also the other 9 discs of movies and extras isn't too shabby either.

I was wondering this as well. I really want the first film with a good transfer in a non-snapper case, but there's no way I'm buying the sequels. I'm going to look into other regions' versions.

You gotta be shittin' me--the majority think paying over $50 for a single movie is acceptable? I mean, yeah, I went through the LaserDisc years, as well, but let's try to get a little perspective on this...

You're not paying $50 for a single movie, you're paying $50 for 3 movies and 7 discs of extras, which are among the best produced ever for DVD.

QuiGonJosh, work with me here--the original poster CLEARLY STATED he ONLY had interest in the first movie and NONE of the other content held appeal for him.

Doesn't matter what he wants, he's still getting 3 movies and 7 discs of extras.

I own all three movies plus Animatrix. I never had a problem with the original transfer on The Matrix and still dont. Its funny that so many who never complained about "color timing" before now think something is wrong with their first Matrix. If the first one ever comes out separate and can be had for less than $17 I may go for it...or may not. But extras dont get me excited anymore. In fact they almost take away the "magic" and then I have an even more critical eye watching these movies after I viewed extras.

Btw..I love ALL the Matrix films!

That's subjective, I and many others love the Trilogy as a whole. In fact, Reloaded is my favorite of the Trilogy.

It doesn't matter if he only wants the first one, the FACT of the matter is that if he buys the boxset, he's getting all 3 films plus 7 bonus discs.
