I like this:
It almost makes it sound like they turned it off on purpose to scare people into donating.
We had a small problem Wednesday and the site was unavailable for most of the day. We apologize for the outage and we thank you for your support and loyalty. Now, since we got your attention, our donation box has been fairly empty this year and with a little help you can become a star member. It is Fast, Easy and Secure!
Thanks!

Well I think they deserve at least $5 each from everyone on this forum who use it. Apparently, y'all like it.

I donated another $15 just now. I had spaced off my regular donations at the end of last year so I'm hoping that makes up for it. Anyone who uses a site daily and finds it helpful, should donate something once in a while. I know it's free and all but Christ.
