I only have the DC / Bust version BTW. Edit: Yes, DVD Rewind shows that the SE had an "Audio commentary by Guillermo del Toro (director) and Mike Mignola (co-executive producer) " Hmm... I would like to listen to that, actually :) |

If I double dip I usually get rid of the older version unless there's some significant difference in the content. E.g. I kept both the theatrical and the Extended LOTR sets. The theatricals I picked up piecemeal from used DVD stores, so it's not the traditional double-dip (where you get version first and then version 2 later, usually after some complaining:) ). Other examples where I kept both versions are Hero, the American release and the Chinese release and probably the same for House of Flying Daggers once I pick up the Region 1 release used.

If the new release is missing anything from the previous release I usually keep both (or in a couple cases all three), but if the new release has everything from the first, I usually give the older release to my parents (they don't even know how to access special features, let alone want to watch them).

Oh I forgot X-Men. Make that four.
|
What was on the original X-Men that didn't carry over to 1.5?

I still like the foil-cover too. |
Hard Boiled: Criterion versus Mei Ah - Mei Ah has better transfer whereas Criterion has better extras and obvious value as a collectible.
Akira: Pioneer versus Pioneer Limited Tin - Collectible value on Limited Tin (picked this version up first). Standard version has DTS track. Ong Bak: Edko VCD versus a standard DVD version. The VCD has no subtitles, but can play on virtually anything. The DVD version is region 3 only w/ subs. Underworld: Standard versus Extended UR - I'm on the fence on this one, so I may not keep both. The standard version sounds better on my set up than the unrated version, but I like having the extra material. Time will tell. |
None.
Anytime I double dip, I trade or sell the other version. I think I currently have two versions of the following: Shawshank Fifth Element Spiderman Saving Private Ryan GoodFellas Alien/Aliens/3/Resurrection But the extra editions are all currently up for sale or trade in the exchange forum. Stew |
I have two versions of The Philadelphia Story. The first is the now OOP MGM version and the second is the new Warners 2-Disc Edition. I was planning on selling the OOP edition on ebay but how much would it sell?
|
The original Meet the Parents has two tracks of commentary while the newer version only keeps one of those tracks.
Also, I think the two different R1 releases of Cube have different commentaries. |
Hmm, ive got 2 versions of the exorcist, and the good the bad and the ugly.
Also have the alien legacy and Quad sets, is there enough difference in these to keep em? I guess the same question applies to the LOTR disks. I only have the EE's, but what specifically is different in the 2 disk theatrical releases as far as extras? If there are enought cool extras Ill probably pick them up cheap during the next gamestop b2g1f. |

I kept the original version of Starship Troopers when I got the Superbit. I'm thinking about getting a new copy of Saturday Night Fever at Wal-Mart for $4.88 to have it in a keepcase. I assume it won't have an insert, so I'll keep the insert from the thin digipak version. |
Also have the alien legacy and Quad sets, is there enough difference in these to keep em? Double dipping for me: Manhunter UK SE (cooler packaging then R1 Anchor Bay, but same content) and Japanese MGM. The Japanese disc is the only intact original theatrical cut. Manhunter fans should know this. I would also double-dip on Mann's Last of the Mohicans--UK is the orig theat cut, R1 is restored transfer and Mann commentary but "messed with" DC. |
Apocalypse Now/Redux
LOTR (still like the theatrical Fellowship of the Ring better) Akira tin/DTS Alien SE/DC Will probably double dip on some of the Classic Monster series at some point for the extra films, like Wolf Man and Creature. |
BlackhawkDown - 2 disk
BlackhawkDown - Superbit |

Well I have the whole Universal Monsters set, so I'd have to replace them all. |
Ive never double dipped but have been tempted for Usual Suspects, Predator and Predator 2.
Will also probably end up with 2 copies of Where eagles dare when i buy the Battlefront Europe boxset (but thats not really double dipping i dont think) |

The only one I can think of off hand that hasn't been mentioned already is Cube and Cube Signature Edition (only if you like commentaries though).
|
Straw Dogs - I have three versions:
The Criterion The Freemantle Region 2 (for the commentaries) The Anchor Bay edition, which I've read, has ONE shot that isn't on the previous two versions. The Universal Monsters The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and I'm sure I'll be double dipping on the upcoming Hitchcocks and Leones as well. But what's really sad is that I have fine versions of all of these on tape and laserdisc (not to mention the old Super 8 copies of some of the classic monsters!). I'm a pathetic man. |
Ones I've Double-dipped and reasons for keepng:
Daredevil - extras Hellboy - I just think both look good next to each other. T2 - extras on UE Halloween - transfer, extras on previous It just depends if a previous version's extras/alt cut is worth keeping or not. I've doubled up on another dozen or so and just traded in the old copy or gave it to my Dad. |
