I am sure someone has asked this but I am new and would like to know if there is a way to beat region coding. I bought Night on Earth on Ebay and it is a region 2 edition Im in region 1. Also has Night On Earth been issued in region 1

Phil, you need to buy a DVD player that's "region free" or see if your current player can be modified (a few players on the market can easily be made "region free"). If you're watching your DVDs on your PC, there is software available that will help you bypass region coding.

Edit: Also be sure to check if the DVD is NTSC or PAL. Not all players sold in North America will play PAL format discs.

No clue about Night on Earth. Sorry.

Also, check out some of the threads in the International Forum where region-free DVD players in all price ranges are discussed. (A popular cheapie is the Philips DVP642 which has a simple one-time remote entry to become region free and is generally available for under $70. It also does the PAL to NTSC conversion.)

Oh yeah, I heard of this movie. Roberto Benigni is in it I think. From what I gather, there is no R1 version.

the coding only affects the consumers really. your points are true but but it's not like they rely on regional coding. i would prefer to get rid of regional coding and have worldwide release dates.

It affects North American consumers, mostly. Everywhere else in the world region-free players seem to be the standard.

In Norway there is no poroblem getting nearly every major brand dvd player region free from the store. I have a denon 3910 that i bought region free from the store. But i did read in an article somewhere that there might not be regions anymore on the new high def formats. That would be nice.

I agree with the masses here. Region coding affects the consumer, in my opinion in a negative manner. While other countries see the release of many American movies as SEs, in OAR editions, or as releases not even available in the US, our choices are to either pay a high price for overseas releases or wait for a release here in the states. An effective way for the movie industry to make scads of money.....I'd have less trouble with it if the releases were made available worldwide rather than by area. Why should movies made in America be available in countries other than the US months beforehand??

The American movie industry dreamed up the region coding and now us the American consumers get screwed while region-free equipment is more or less a standard in the rest of the world. WTF!

philips dvp 642 -- available at target/walmart/best buy etc ... for 65 - 75 bucks. it has a simple hack for region free playing (google is your friend). plays pal. plays almost any video format (avi, divx, vcd, svcd, etc ...). you will not be disappointed (except by the remote, which is subpar).
