Everytime I switch between watching a dvd and regular t.v. programming I have to turn the volume way down. Going from watching a movie on dvd to quickly checking a baseball score is sometimes unnerving. Isn't there a way for dvd production companies to equalize the volume for dvds to be near the same level for regular programs?

Dynamic range. DVDs have a large range, and actually use it, so dialogue is often much quieter than TV dialogue. Also, output levels can vary from source to source, anyway.

Yep. And because of the dynamic range, if they increased the overall level it would sound like shit j(ust listen to how modern CDs are mastered) or damage your system.

Most DVD players have an option in the setup menu to compress the audio output, boosting the lows while reducing the highs in volume.

Question. What are you using to listen to your DVDs? TV speakers or a dedicated HT surround system?

I notice the difference when I listen to audio through my Sony surround system, but it is stronger when I'm listening to shows or movies through the volume on the television itself. I wasn't trying to start a fuss here, I just didn't now what there had to be such a discrepancy between the two. Now i understand and I thank everyone who has contributed to this thread.

Another option is to get a receiver which will vary the default volume for you based on the input. For example, as you switch to TV, it will switch to TV's default volume.
