I assume Count de Monet is reffering to my seamless branching/DTS comment. Since this DVD is to employ seamless branching, instead of two whole different versions of the film being included in one disc (which would be DVD suicide as far as video quality is concerned) it'll just have the theatrical cut and the ability of seamlessly reinserting the 17 additional minutes as was done in Terminator 2 Ultimate DVD edition among others. There should be no reason for the DTS not to fit with the extra footage especially since video compression is far improved these days.

Well, The Patriot-Superbit has both DD and DTS and it runs just at 3 hours long, and this Gladiator - EE comes in at about 8 minutes short of 3 hours, so I don't know why a DTS track couldn't be included.

I totally forgot about the SUperbit edition of The Patriot. Well, as Mike Lowrey established with his comparison, there is no reason to exclude a DTS track.

Right, but with the "Are you Entertained" Trivia Track, would that not present a problem, or not. I'd guess not, but who knows. Does seemless branching take a little more room than none at all?

I see what you mean. I guess I thought you were wondering how he knew about the seamless brancing and no dts was going to be on this dvd. My bad.

Wonder if the Rhino scene is one of the extra scenes added?

Assuming the trivia track is just plain text and not a bunch of pretty pictures accompanying text, it should be no problem. As for seamless branching, we're only talking 17 minutes here. It shouldn't take up too much. Or they should just drop the seamless branching altogether. The audio commentary is not being ported over and it seems most (if not all) the special features are new. At this point, anyone who wants the TC already has it. Just make this it's own release rather than a pseudo-upgrade.

I doubt it, Get Me Coffee, as none of that scene was shot. Only an FX test was made before the scene was dropped. Unless Ridley Scott gets Russell Crowe back to shoot new scenes, as will be done for the extended cut of The Punisher, I doubt we'll see more of the rhino scene than the 2 disc set showed us.

Yep, depending on the packaging, looks like I will be picking up a slim 4 disk and adding my current disk with DTS to it.

I dont remember what is on the 2nd disk on the original, but hopefully, the new release will include those features.

Also, if the 17 minutes include any of the currently released deleted scenes, I dont think it will make the movie all that much better. I love the current release.

The Patriot is not 3 hours, it's 164min. and about 7-8 of those are credits.

Apparently, it won't. Keep your 2-disc set. Get the EE to have a 5-disc set

not to go off tangent but 7.1 is front left- center - front right, right surround, center surround, left surround, (7th channel): lef/right side (like theatre configurment) .1 : bass.

and BTW the Patriot's DTS soundmix is amazing - better than the other aspects of the film.

Superbit - the inclusion of only the film: audio + video with the largest amount of dedicated disc space for uncompressed image and sound. It rocks!

Couldn't they have included a DTS but dropped the DD 5.1 track all together and replaced it with a stereo track that would take up much less space? That seems like the sensible thing to do.

lord forbid someone screw over Dolby by not including the 5.1 soundmix. That would never happen

Extremely BAD idea. Not all equipment is DTS capable. Mine isn't for example, so really all this DTS talk is a moot point for me until I upgrade my equipment.

To throw out a DD 5.1 track for a DD 2.0 track is a BIG no-no in my book. They did this with the SPR-60th Anniversary Edition and kept many people from buying the box set with the other movies because that version only had DTS.

Love this movie, it resurrected the lovable sword and sandal genre. Still has the best sword battle, no CGI fanciness, just grit and blood.

For benfiltness, Superbit is a version of disc put out by Columbia-Tristar/Sony Pictures that supposedly allows the most room on the disc possible for video and audio information, hence leaving out any sort of fillers like trailers, featurettes, commentaries, or alternate language tracks.

However some Superbit titles have 'cheated' on those specs. Some like Das Boot has a English 5.1 track as well as the German 5.1 track.

Others like the recent Silverado has a commentary.

For a list of Superbit titles, just go to any on-line DVD seller like Amazon and type in 'Superbit' in the search. I think there's currently 55 titles in the Superbit Collection.

The only Superbit that's worth a damn is Starship Troopers and 5th Element.

you should seriously consider upgrading to DTS. The sound quality is often times much much much better than Dolby Digital.

I believe Desperado and Spider-Man were also "worth a damn." The former more than the latter. And the Superbit of Spider-Man 2 was the only way to get it in DTS so that was definitely worth it.

the superbit of Bram Stoker's Dracula is further improved with a smooth very detailed film like look and enough bass to cave in the floor.

That's a pretty bold statement. And one that any fan of Lawrence of Arabia is bound to disagree with...
