Spaceballs CE out early.

Just picked it up at Cinema One here in Ontario. $19.99 CDN (which is not out of line)

Amazon lists this as a May 3rd release?

Anyone else see this out yet?

Damed 04-09-05 03:01 PM

...and before anyone asks..

It's in a slipcase. No insert.

Rammsteinfan 04-09-05 03:09 PM

Does it have a insert? ;)

Does it have the same old crappy commentary by Brooks?

Damed 04-09-05 03:13 PM

I never owned the previous release, so I couldn't tell you if it's the same or not.

AND NO INSERT! :p

Rammsteinfan 04-09-05 03:19 PM

Thanks though. It probably is the same one... its very boring and prob one of the worst commentaries out there.

What do the menu's look like? Are they still Spaceballs The DVD Menu which looks like its a console from one of the ships?

mcharro3 04-09-05 03:20 PM

But since you bought it in Canada, there's bilingual packaging, right?

Damed 04-09-05 03:22 PM

Yep. Both the slipcase and case itself are bilingual. I can take that, but it;s the bilingual on the spine that pisses me off.

Rubix 04-09-05 03:28 PM

maybe you can quote the first sentence from the commentary track so people who know the old one can see if it's the same one. if the first on sucked i really hope it's a new one too.

Damed 04-09-05 03:29 PM

Different menu.

First on the disc is an anti-piracy ad (you can skip it, thank God)

Then a trailer for Pink Panther with Steve Martin (also skippable)

Then you get the SPACEBALLS title, like the way STAR WARS comes on the screen at the beggining of those movies. Inside each letter of "Spaceballs" there are moving images from the movie. Then "Collectors Edition" comes in underneath. It pans down (a la Star Wars) to the surface of the death star, then the options come up "play, setup, etc). In the right top corner Dark Helmet's helmet appears, and it switches to various scenes there.

LMAO. If you leave it long enough on the menu, space invaders starts playing (the old arcade game) and shoots out all the letters on the options.

Damed 04-09-05 03:31 PM

Commentary starts off:

"Spaceballs is the brainchild, of one Jew and 2 Gentiles"

This is as the MGM logo comes up.

Damed 04-09-05 03:37 PM

DTS track is NICE>

SinCity 04-09-05 03:39 PM

lucky! as a matter of fact i just picked the old version up for $7.00. Don't think I'll be getting the CE, but maybe in a "long, long time" away.

P.S. - I couldve sworn this would come in a digi. The packaging mirors that of the Get Shorty Se. Weird...

Damed 04-09-05 03:43 PM

No Digi. Single case flipper ( as in a 2 sided disc holder in a single sized case. This is a 2 separate disc release)

Damed 04-09-05 03:49 PM

DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1

DVDFreaker 04-09-05 03:58 PM

How is the transfer?

surfingelectrod 04-09-05 04:02 PM

Flipper?! Goddamnit.

Rammsteinfan 04-09-05 04:04 PM

I dont have the old dvd anymore, anyone confirm that Commentary info from above?

SinCity 04-09-05 04:11 PM

i thought it was a 2-disc set? thats what the R1 box says...hopefully us Americans will get the 2d. if not, im definately not buying this set.

Rammsteinfan 04-09-05 04:12 PM

R1 is a 2 Disc set

SinCity 04-09-05 04:15 PM

good. i hate godamned flippers!

Rammsteinfan 04-09-05 04:22 PM

I concur with that... ill take 2 discs over flippers anyday.

DVDFreaker 04-09-05 04:26 PM

You got that fucking right! :)

SinCity 04-09-05 04:27 PM

this surprises me. orgazmo came here a flipper and in can a 2d, as most releases do, but now spaceballs is flipper can and 2d here? seems strange to me...i just hope mgm doesnt change their minds and change R1 to flipper, to be cheap (as always)...

btw- is the slip any different than the keepcase? and how are the xtras?

Damed 04-09-05 04:41 PM

Sorry for the confusion..

Not flipper as in "1 disc that you flip over"

Flipper CASE as in it looks like a single DVD case but has a 2 sided holder on the inside.

Fear not, this is 2 separate discs. 1 for the film, and 1 for the special features.

Damed 04-09-05 04:52 PM

Slip and keepcase are identical. The slipcase even has a hole cut in it so that the UPC from the keepcase shows through.

Cornelius1047 04-09-05 04:53 PM

It's the same commentary from the original release.

so when you say "Flipper CASE" you mean a normal keepcase? i never heard of a flipper case before.

BuddyRevell 04-09-05 07:19 PM

Or for the love of, can you just post a pic?

Thanks if you can

SinCity 04-09-05 09:56 PM

so lemme get this straight....its a "flipper" keepcase?

and the UPC is cut out of the back? I hate that....

Damed 04-09-05 10:01 PM

It is a regular keepcase, with a center disc holder that holds a disc on both sides. When you open the case, it flips back and forth - hence me calling it a "flipper". Obviously that's not the proper terminology, but that's what I called it.

And yes, there is a hole in the slipcase so the UPC on the keepcase can show through.

thanks for clearing that up lol

so same commentary, "meh" features, and basically the same (albeit now animorphic) Visuals? I'm starting to think this wouldnt be a very good purchase AT ALL.

Rammsteinfan 04-10-05 12:08 AM

Sounds like this is a different case than what will be in the US shortly...

SinCity 04-10-05 01:17 AM

i hope its different than the US version. im not about to pay $15-$20 just for a few crap features, DTS (which i dont use) and an animorphic pricture. Damn, cant MGM do a little more with this release? SpaceBalls is a cult classic, and im sure itll make alot of money when it comes out. But those who are uniformed will be surprised to learn they just bought a Superbit-ish rerealease of the same DVD they already have...

Damed 04-10-05 07:46 AM

Full specs list:

New Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer (looks awesome BTW)
DTS 5,1
DD 5.1
English, French and Spanish subtitles

Audio Commentary by Mel Brooks
Spaceballs: The Documentary
In Conversation: Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan
John Candy: Comic Spirit
Storyboard to Film comparison
Film Flubs
Spacequotes
Spaceballs: The Trivia Game
Spaceballs: The behind the movie photos
Exhibitor Trailer with Mel Brooks Introduction
Spaceballs: The Costume Gallery
Spaceballs: The Art Gallery
Original Theatrical Trailer

So it's quite a good release, at least as far as I am concerned, as I did not own the previous release.

Zodo 04-10-05 10:47 AM

Anyone watch the documentary yet?

I'm wondering if it's worth double dipping for.

I don't know, all of those sound pretty good to me. Especially the sound and picture, which makes it worth a purchase for quite a few people on this forum. The extras don't sound too bad either.
